Motul X-Clean 5W30 - LL04

Anyone ever use this motor oil before for their Ds?

Link

Just wondering how its properties stack up to the other motor oils out there for our cars.

If you read the link that you posted, on the bottom of the first page it says, "ATTENTION: BMW LL-04 product can be used for gasoline engines only.." It also does not say bmw on the recommendations.

I alternate between dealer castrol and total quartz ineo mc3 (http://www.total-us.com/lub/lubusa.n...C?OpenDocument). The total oil works really well for me and feels like the car runs smoother with it. The oil takes slightly longer to turn black compared to the castrol.

The Motul X-Clean 5W30 is fine for our diesels. You misread what it said.

Here is some more info:

GBD, do you have any properties for the factory Castrol? I have a small collection of properties for some of the other LL04 oils, but it's hard to compare to the factory oil, since Castrol doesn't seem to be very forthcoming on specs.

Regarding this Motul oil, it compares fairly well with other LL04 oils, but I suggest you compare its specs to Mobil 1 - it's surprising how good M1 is. If you want to get a bit more exotic, I suggest this oil: http://www.epc.shell.com/Docs/GPCDOC...20227110_5.pdf

DD, I agree with you on all counts. It's so hard to find any data for the Castrol OE oil. As for the other two, neither are sold here in Canada so I'd get destroyed after shipping/duty taxes and end up paying double what it's worth if not even more than that.

So in Canada we are pretty much restricted to the Castrol. The Motul one I can get for $40 for 5L with tax all in.

Yes, I've been on the road, and haven't had a chance to try to figure out how to post it. I'll try later today (hopefully).

Hey Greekboy, mind sharing your source for the Motul? Seems like a great price.

Found it! The oil might go by another name now, but I'm pretty sure this is it: http://www.tds.castrol.com.au/pdf/85...93_2007_10.pdf

This oil is recommended by AMSOIL for LL-04. It is not on the BMW LL-04 approved oil list. It is almost twice expensive as the BMW approved Mobil-1 ESP formula that I got at Pep Boys last month.

Hey DieselDiner. Now that you have data for the Mobil1, Castrol, Motul, Pennzoil and Amsoil, how would you rank them? I know it's not an exact "proof" of what's better but I'm just curious how they rank solely on specs,

From my interpretation of the data I'd say that Amsoil has the best stats. high temp high shear viscosity is 3.7 mPa x sec while pennzoil is pretty much the same if you take significant figures at 3.68. Mobil 1 has a 3.58 while the castrol and motul just have the values to the tenths at 3.5. Also taking the kinematic viscosities into account and pour point i'd rank them.

1. Amsoil
2. Pennzoil
3. Mobil 1 esp formula
4/5. very close between total quartz ineo mc3 and castrol
6. motul

It's not that motul is a bad oil by comparison of data. It'd probably be more accurate if they went with more significant figures. But overall since your in canada and its very cold i'd go with the two with the lowest pour points. Which are amsoil and mobil 1 esp formula.

Only things with the Amsoil is that BMW doesn't recognize it as an LL-04 type of engine oil and its Viscosity Index seems to be the lowest of the five oils at a value of 157. I've read that higher is better.

well by virtue of viscosity index total has the highest at 167. 166 motul, 164 mobil 1 esp, 157 amsoil european car formula.
http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produc...?code=AELQT-EA it says LL04

the thicker amsoil at 5w40 has a 171 viscosity index.

if you use the product finder on motul it'll show you that the Motul LL-04 Specific is the best. http://www.motul.com/system/product_...pdf?1323967432

does anyone know if there is are advantages and disadvantages from using 5w30 to 5w40?
