Thumbs down Door Opened While Driving!!!

Ok, so tonight I was driving home and as I went over a bump in the road my driver door popped open. The door actually came completely unlatched, the chime went off and lights came on inside as if I was parked and had opened the door.

I had to push the door out and close it again. Any thoughts on what I should do? I would be surprised if BMW could "reproduce" this "problem" in order to fix it as a service item.

uh might as well have them look at it just incase, otherwsie freak accident, hit something just right it could happen, short of locking your car (which is recommended) theres no way to fully secure your door

happened to me this weekend as well and never really had a prob with the car for over a year...I believe other members had similar problems before, but I don't recall what was the issue. I'm just assuming it's a "freak accident".

I'm surprised other people have had this happen - I guess it makes sense that it could just not have been completely closed. Just surprised it had never happened before tonight. Thanks for the quick thoughts.

You probably just didnt close it all the way... I drive like a bat out of hell and have hit some spine chilling bumps at high speed and have never had my door open.. But I am not saying it cant happen but most likely your door wasnt shut all the way and yes it wont warn you about this. I am just used to the sound my car makes when doors are closed but most passengers dont realize they didnt shut the door all the way and get freaked out when I tell them their door isnt shut.

Wow, might have to lock doors for added safety until resolved. Please keep us posted.

I had it happen to me once, and I do have the automatic door locking on. I suspect that my wife just did not close the passenger door all the way, even though I did not get a warning. After that I listened and made sure the door was totally closed.

The Assist system is designed to unlock the doors in case of a crash... maybe, just maybe there is a fluke in the sensor that trigger this unlocking. Or just a plain fluke in the central locking module...

From there to have the door opened -as in not even latched- that's something else...

Unlocking is a long ways off from a door opening...

I'd still say it's folks soft shutting the doors. Getting it 90% latched, just enough to fool the sensors and then having it pop open going down the road.

Either way and regardless as to why? How many of you that have had this happen, have had it happen more than once? Just curious, it would be a pretty significant safety issue if BMW doors were just flinging open when latched properly... So I'm still saying it's a case of operator head-space, the weight of the doors, and peoples desires to NOT slam them.

I had same thing happened to me twice in a E46 over 4 years.
Of course, this was never taken care of because the service guys "CANNOT REPRODUCE the problem."

Well, there is a difference between the unlocking and completely opening.

BMW's have an awesome safety feature that when its in an accident, the doors automatically unlock and hazards come on.

If jarred hard enough(like a pothole or something) I could see the solenoids getting jolted in a way to send a message to unlock the doors.

Just complete speculation on my part though.

I'm on the same boat as you guys, my door for what ever reason popped open while getting off the highway, there was no bump just a hard turn in a higher then normal speed.

Weird.

My friend had a 1996(?) Chrysler LeBaron and his driver's side door fell off on the freeway in front of me. The whole door came off and was bouncing around on the freeway until I drove over it (in my beater car). It was hilarious actually, but probably more so because it was such a POS car and there was nobody else on the road and no one got hurt. We ended up going back and kicking the door to the side of the road. He drove home without a door (~20 miles) while I was LMAO driving next to him and seeing his car without a door.

Hope it doesn't happen to a new BMW though. Might still be funny but not quite as much so...
