Love my 335i with 78k miles on it...the warranty expired in jan 2013....have been reading a lot on the forums that 335's are notorious after high mileage and can't afford to be without a car or spend any more money on a car with 78k miles on it...

I am picking up a x5 but now I am debating that is it worth starting a payment all over again or should I take a chance and ride my 335 till it drops....if I had to spend 5-6k on the car then I will really kicking myself cause the dealer is offering me 18k for it and the x5 that I selected is 2012 with 10k miles on it....

What do u guys think....help me decide here pls....

Can't make a decision for you, but if it were me I would look at the car's previous reliability record. Aside from the HPFP recall has it ever left you stranded anywhere?

Also HPFP is warrantied until 10 years/120k mls (not 100% so correct me if I'm wrong). As well the turbo's have their warranty extended due to waste gate rattles. I don't know the milage cut off for that though.

Aside from those and if you're still happy with it and it has been a reliable car then I would keep it. Keep in mind, most people come on a forum to vent about something that's wrong with their car, or like in your case are looking for advice about their car. Therefore the things you keep hearing out there are skewed. I fell trap to that as well when I bought my car and got a 328 instead. I'm by no means unhappy with my purchase decision as I love my car, but I didn't get a 335 because I'd kept on hearing they were too unreliable.

I would definitely hang on to the 335 if there isn't anything major going on now or in the past. I assume you got it because you like the handling, speed etc which the X5 will not give you. On top of that you have a car that I assume you're not paying anything for right now (based on your post) and instead you're going to move to a car that you will be spending $XXX on per month? Why not just save that money and put some towards repairs instead? You have loaners from dealer if your car goes in for repairs so I don't see why you'd ever be out of a car unless it left you stranded on the road which technically any car can do.

The only reason I would vote for getting the X5 is if you wanted/needed a SUV for some specific reason(s) (e.g. cargo space, seating space, ground clearance, newer features etc) or were getting some super awesome deal and can see yourself wanting/needing these things in a year or 2 (though prices will def come down since new X5 is coming out soon). But if you are liking your 335i and aren't craving something new then save your money -- put some towards repairs and some towards beer or something.

Hope that made sense/helps

I would not make that move, X5's are not exactly fun to drive, 2007 335i's are....

Have you spent any time on the X5 forum? Consider that most people come on these forums to solve problems. I'm guessing you'll see much of the same on the X5 forum.

Anecdotal aside - Whenever I'm at the dealer for service, I'm always amazed at how many X5's are in the service bays.

90 % of the forums and what you read online are complaints. You read the horror stories, the maintenance problems, etc. There are plenty of people out there with no problems to minimum problems with their vehicles.... and they don't post a single thing because there is nothing to complain about..

I say keep ur 335, those monthly amounts ull be paying for the x5, u can set aside for any repair for the 335.

I personally don't like the look of the X I do like the interior but never a fan of the outside appearance.
I see it this way for me, I put money and time into this car, perform maintenance myself (or a dealer if you can't) Stay on top of things and it should last a long time. All cars break down and things wear out either prematurely or over due. The only real difference is these cars cost more to fix or for parts.
If I could right now go back to when I purchased this 328, I would have bought the 335 instead. Other than BMW's poor parts quality that last a very short life, if you take care of it, it will somewhat take care of you....
On a side note. since owning BMW, I have never seen so many flatbeds with BMW's on them LOL

Trade-in does not make sense @ 78K.

1. X5 pmt/mo for 1Y = ~8K (guesstimate) + depriciation = 12K+
2. Considering you have only 78K mi over 6Y you will put on another 12K in the following year. Your trade-in value will be almost the same, let's assume 16.5K.
3. Turbos should be covered and even if they are not what's the worst case scenario to replace them?
4. Add insurance and do the final math.
5. What is the fun factor value, 335 vs x5?

I don't think it makes sense to spend 1K/mo for X5 at this point in time. Keep driving, do the regular maint. and enjoy! Sometimes you need to avoid forums. People that complain on forums are a very small % of the overall E9x population.

Just my 2c ...

Coming from a guy that's traded in a fair share of vehicles before finally settling on the one I've got, I'd recommend keeping your car. You've put so much money in to it and it seems like it hasn't done you wrong.

It's a very fun car to drive and jumping to an X5 sounds like an odd choice almost unless you really want/need the utility that vehicle has to offer.

Don't trade in a car just because an opportunity presents itself. I've done that and it's come back to bite me. Trade in your car only if you really want to get in to the new vehicle you're trading it in for.

Not trying to tell you what to do, but that's how my thought process would go after having been in your situation plenty of times before.

Either way, good luck!
