I just don't like the way the media seem to be jumping ALL over it. Yes I know they need to report stuff but having this as the main headline 24 hours a day for the last few days is exactly what Kimmy wants? Surely a more sensible approach would be to stop giving this guy his 15 minutes of fame?

You could almost be mistaken for thinking that the powers that be WANT this to be big news, after all a scared populace is far easier to distract\control (where's the tin foil hat smiley? )

It has been a thought provoking few weeks.

I personnally think he is just doing it to try and stay in power in NK and does not intend to do anything in terms of invading SK or nuking the US. That doesn't mean he won't do something rash like the shelling of the disputed islands again etc., nor does it mean his threats should not be treated diligently by SK / US and precautions taken.

I think it has been quite interesting for our trident debate though, which for sure will be a much harder argument to make than it was during the mid 80s cold war. It is clear that NK has no credible long range missile & miniturised nuclear capability - but where might he (or any other malcontent nation) be in 10 years. If we bin trident, how long to rebuild? If we bin it it is safe to say it'll be binned for ever.

I'm boardline pro trident, as I'm swayed by the 'we use it everyday' argument, noting of course that in reality we'll never actually use it. Whilst NK on this occasion is not relevant, the fact that you have some random nuclear capable nutter threatening to use his buckets of sunshine is - the future is never certain!

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I see Alex Salmond is determined to get rid when he wins independence. I dont think he has considered that he will also be getting rid of one of the biggest employers on the Clyde and making a considerable number of Jocks unemployed. Personally Id rather have Kim as my leader than that useless knob. At least he has a better haircut than Salmond.

That's a bit harsh, the tone that is. You have to remember that the SNP is basically the left wing of the labour party who also want independence. The left wing nature has been hidden over the years because of the independence factor but it is still there and they have the same outlook as left wing labourites from the seventies, hence CND, and no nuclear weapons etc. though they haven't promised to nationalise all the means of production (the old Labour clause 4 was it not?)

For those too young, NK invaded the South in the fifties and the "allies" were from many countries, not just USA (UN sponsored hence other nations got involved). Because NK never signed a peace treaty so technically are still at war with the South, the US retained a military presence whilst the South built up it's military (good business for the US defence contractors).

With the continued US presence and ever increasing UN sanctions over the years, your standard in-breeding dictatorship gets a little antsy and paranoid (yes NK, they all hate your guts) so in the past, NK has found that posturing and threatening gets them concessions at the world table - note that there is no hint of them contributing any changes, it's always one way traffic. So, they are following a tried and tested procedure - let's up the threatening posture and see what that gets us.

As they have spent what little they have on the military and their people continue to go hungry, there may come a point when the generals in charge decide that it's a case of use it or lose it, then NK may invade again. The tricky question then, is what will China do?

Last time, the UN forces had many staged battles with Chinese soldiers. China officially took no part in the war but approximately two million vexed Chinese (funnily, all with military training and equipment) were so upset that they joined in to help their NK brothers.

This time, however, the US is already present in the South. Neither they or the South Koreans will be taken by surprise and since South Korea is one of the few places in the world that manufactures certain products whose absence will be felt by the rest of the world (China included), AND, in the sixty years since, the US has demonstrated a remarkable ability to destroy entire armies wholesale and in short order.

Simply put, unless they are completely bonkers, and/or completely desperate, this will all die down.

The Naval Base on the Clyde is the biggest employer on the West Coast of Scotland. Salmond has never visited and never says a word about the potential loss of employment, he is a pillock and I agree with your sentiment. Salmond IS the SNP, take him out (not literally of course) then the SNP is nothing. I have yet to meet any Scot who wants independence.

Back on topic, this NK thing does strengthen the Trident successor debate.

Hence they are lowering the voting age - so they can win influenceable teenagers who don't understand the consequences of leaving GB.

I can't believe this is legal!

And another tactic they have adopted is to exclude Scots who live abroad from having a say in the future of their own country.

I own property in my own country, pay taxes in the UK and my Council Tax, yet daft wee kids can vote.

I f@#king hate the SNP now. Trying to steal my country from me.

From discussing this with many Scots expats I can say this won't go unchallenged.

I don't want or try to vote on domestic affairs - but this is much more important.

If can't vote about the future of my own country, I'll go out my way to f@#ck over the SNP. Anyway I can. And that is coming from someone who is normally politically apathetic.

Fingers crossed then

Unfortunately it's the "unless they're completely bonkers" bit that worries me!

That programme really made the country look like a fucking joke. How can we take them seriously as a nuclear threat when they can't even remember to top up the electricity meter?

Devils advocate............

Interesting........... one persons brainwashing is another persons education.
While Im sure the BBC produced an accurate representation, its great that we can trust our establishment so much.
