2007 335i w/ 23k Miles on it. Should I buy?

Hello e90post, just looking for some good ole fashioned advice as to what the next car should or should not be. I've spent hours reading threads about the issues on the 335. And I know all about the HPFP, the Turbos, the VCG, etc.

I have 4 friends whom own 335s.

2 - 08's
2 - 09's

This is a manual 2007 335i with 23k on it for 22.5. Single lease owner, well equipped minus iDrive. Should I go for it? Or should I buy a beater and save for a CPO'd LCI N55? :P

If you don't plan to mod, I think it is better to get cpo n55.

I will most likely be doing some basic mods such as a JB4 to run on Map 1 or 5 in conjunction with a DCI, scoops. Potentially doing some DP's and exhaust work.

I'd definitely buy that. We bought our 07 a bit over a year ago for 25k with 48k miles and things have been good (put 20k miles on it so far). I wouldn't be scared off by the N54 (knock on wood) despite all the negativity around here. Low mileage plus single owner. If everything looks good during PPI and your test drive I would go for it. The only question I'd ask is whether or not it has some kind of warranty? Sounds like factory warranty would be out and it's probably not CPO'd?

Sadly, the factory warranty is gone. Even if there was a CPO it would most likely be gone as well. It has already had the HPFP(HDP) replaced during the recall campaign.

Thanks a ton for the nod. It's very reassuring hearing a "success story" on an 07 !

I think I am going to pull the trigger.

Get a CPO, or have a back up cash stash, just in case.

Yeah I think being prepared for problems is as important as talking to the owner, checking records/history, doing PPI, test-drive etc. It sounds like you already know what the common issues are and are prepared (at least mentally) to handle any other issues that come up (though I wouldn't foresee many at 23k miles).

It's always strange to me when people come here complaining and acting shocked about having repairs on a car they bought that is known to be costly to maintain when things go wrong. So as long as you have some form of warranty to help if/when things go badly (good paying job, cash stash, BMW/third-party warranty) you should be good.

The only other thing I would add is that I am definitely jealous of all the LCI updates. I don't do much performance modding so if I could have waited (which I didn't have the time to do) I probably would have waited for a LCI just because I love the newer stuff (particularly the headlights, hood, taillights, M sport, and iDrive) but wouldn't want to bother with retrofitting.

I've had a '06 and a '07 and both have been relatively cheap to maintain. Nothing out of the ordinary by any means. Don't own the car if you cannot afford to and I second ndukyh's comment on finding it strange what some people complain about... But then again my other cars have been mostly Italian...

I'm coming from an 06 330i, which had it's fair share of issues which I was fine with. Additionally, I have an Indy Mechanic that specializes in BMW's. Whom charges half the rate of BMW. Had him do the exhaust and waterpump on my last e90.

The goal of this was to try and gain some perspective on whether or not the first gen 335 was the black eye of the N54 series, and that for some reason or another the 08/09's were better. But from reading I think all N54's were generally the same.

I love my 07. Wanted an 09 but settled for 07. I'm not even sure how that happened.

What is the manufacture date? I only ask because I believe the CPO only lasts two years past the original warranty. I have an '08 328i and the CPO runs out in little over a year. I think the price is right, but if the CPO is only good for another couple of months it might not be that great of a price. I would still get it though.

Build date is 1/17/2007

And the car is coming without a CPO. However, it is the exact color combo and option packages I want in a 335 with 23k miles on it.

Sport, Premium, Cold Weather
162 wheels
And they spent 2100 bucks reconditioning the interior of the car and removing all curb rash from the wheels.

Only thing it doesnt have that I wanted was AWD, but I can deal.

:P

I actually just got off the phone with the BMW Store close to me. They offer their "Premier Warranty" which covers everything except wear and tear items.

Premier Plus - 4800
Premier - 4600
Powertrain Plus - 4400
Powertrain - 4100

This is for a 5 year or 60k mile warranty. Seems fairly expensive.

Anyone have any experience with GMPP?

Put the $4000+ in a savings account and after $60k miles go celebrate all the money you saved instead of buying the insurance. These cars aren't known for engine failure and the items that do cause trouble (HPFP, wastegates) are covered by recall's / separate extended warranties.
