E85 with JB4 Map 5 Experience

Yesterday I decided to give it a try. Mixed 2.5 gallons of E85 with 91 octane on JB4 map 5. Did a few WOT runs for the engine to adapt the mix and my oh my, the car is a fawkin rocket. I made some WOT run logs, will email it to Terry and post later. Some notes,

1. The car felt like stock till I did the WOT runs, after that it feels very responsive. A slight tap on the paddle throws you back.
2. A lot more torque on the low end. My rear tires lost traction a few time when punching it on 2nd and 3rd(Tires are Michelin SSP Summer bought in December)
3. On the high end, I felt slight increase in power on the 5th and 6th, not the same as the lower end.
4. Engine temp was around 240 but never passed it. Outside temp was around 92 yesterday.

Next time I will try to push it up to 3 gallons, see what happens. Question here is, Why are the rear tires loosing traction? Do I need better suspension?

Edit: Everything is stock except the previous owner removed the stock mufflers and had straight pipe, I have Borla XR-1 Mufflers only. The entire exhaust is stock, only different mufflers.

Log time: Emailed the logs to Terry, he said everything looks good.

What other mods are you running, or is it only the JB4?

92 degrees already

What else other than JB4 have you done to it?

Its Vegas man, this is just the beginning lol

The previous owner removed stock mufflers, I put Borla XR-1 Mufflers only to quite it down. The rest of the exhaust is stock.

You can over power just about any pure summer street tire with the car. You can dial back the boost in 1st & 2nd through your lap top & just need to get a feel for the rest of the gears. I have 275X30X19 Conti DW's & can break them lose with little effort. Car can do a little dance on WOT shifts

Most of the quick cars are running drag radials like Nitto 555 or 555R.

It sure is amazing isn't it? I put in 5 gallon of e85 and 10 91 and it did everything you have already mentioned except my temp stayed at 210 instead of the usual 245.

If you dont have an LSD and are making lots of power, that will cause the loss of traction. 335Problems!

Just curious, I asked Terry and he said without the wires a 20/80 mix is the most he would recommend, so I did 3 gallons of E85 with 12 gallons of 93. I agree there was a huge difference in Map 5 after some WOT pulls in 3rd, just be careful with the stock charge pipe when running tuned, especially higher boost than Map 1.

If you want to run more you need to try it in small increments & send in the logs. I am at 5-5.5 gal into 93 & its all done I stuck a fork in it. 6 gallons will throw a code. With the open fuel loop set to 85 my trims are in range.

Thing to remember is from the factory the 355is has a different timing curve than the stock 335i & can handle more boost without having a problem. This will account for different recommendations from Terry for how much E85 to use

Have not had a chance to dyno the car yet but one of the guys working with us hit 390whp on a dynoJet with no mods at all. Our base line runs were within 3whp of each other.

I am planning to do a dyno test in the near future. I am thinking one stock for baseline, one with 3 gallons of E85 on Map5 and one with 100 octane on Map 7.

I love E85! I've been using it for about a month now. I put in 5.5 gallons E85 and around 7 gallons 93. With that mixture and the G5 ISO I'm hitting 18psi on map 5. E85 is a miracle drug! I still can't believe the power it creates! Congrats on your new found power!

Any references or just being a negative Nancy?

OP I had the same experience with ethanol, it's just plain fun. I have catless dp's and the smell it makes is phenomenal. I will say being in a warmer climate you will be able to run higher mixtures of e85 and see gains from it. Just be sure to watch your fuel trims in your logs. Last summer mine was rock solid until ~130 at WOT then it hit the trim.

Welcome to the good life!

I posted the log picture. From the logs, the highest I saw was 13.7psi at 5384 RPM

I just dyno'd my automatic trans 535 on Sunday. The car is stock except DCI, Jb4 and about 30-35% E85 blend. Only made 1 pull cause the car went into limp mode right after. Anyway, it made 380rwhp and 423rwtq on a Dynojet 224. The car is so much fun to drive. I am extremely impressed with the added power. Thanks Terry, You are the Man.

I was going to start with 3 gal E85 and top off with 91 for my first test.
Otherwise, you gotta get gas at different stations here in Vegas.

I guess I could probably push it a little more, being that I have the 335is as well.
But, Kevin knows the problems I have been having. I don't want to push it just yet.
