The Nav updates can be seen from the iDrive.
Probably 2008 on a '59 car, which also means 5 character post code entry.
May be worth getting the $tealer to agree to update the maps - or pull a fast one and you buy the discs, as long as they code the car!!! Otherwise it is fairly easy to update the maps aftermarket.

If you ask about any other software updates, they probably won't have a clue what you are on about!!!

You'll get 7 digit postcode search as long as the cars using the latest software and the maps are the latest release (currently its premium 2013-2). This is what you should cheekily request!

You're right about the HDD set-up, but to update the maps, you either use discs (a total of 3) in the DVD slot, which will take approx 3 hours from end to end. Alternatively the USB drive in the glovebox is utilised and is quicker.

Thanks, I'll see how what I can get out of them!

How much would they typically charge to update maps?

If my memory serves me correctly; 25 for the 3 discs (very reasonable) and 180 for the activation code (robbing bar stewards)!

It's not the end of the world if you can't get the dealer to include this within the sale. You could buy the discs from them and there's a well known chap who will provide the same codes as BMW for (a much more reasonable) 50!

So bear this in mind...

No mate, the older system uses a static DVD. But a new version can be purchased for more up to date maps and "copies" (non Genuine) will also include speed camera locations in some cases.

If you do a search there are plenty of suggestions on where to get the copied discs from. Alternatively you could purchase a genuine more up to date disc from eBay or the likes.
