Lately, i've been hearing a loud "clank" when I put the car in gear and drive off or even when I reverse and the ds is under load. It comes from near the BACK of the car.If I drive slow enough, I can hear the clank shifting into 2nd gear as well.

If i let off the accelerator, it clanks again( if I am driving slow enough).

I did some searching and there was one thread here, but I don't think it was the same.

My question is, how hard is it to change the ujoint out? Could that be it?

Could also be a loose bolt on the diff. supports. Check all the bolts supporting the diff and re-tighten as necessary, using the torques specified in the Bentley manual.

My car did the same thing. Turned out to be the splines in the middle of the drive shaft needed to be repacked with grease.

if its a 325(which your sig says it is) then yes-remove the rear diff imput flange(which requires driveshaft be removed) and lube contact area with special grease supplied by bmw. Replace seal for flange and retorque nut. reinstalled driveshaft. and bam! noise is gone...

I have something like this going on as well: let off gas at low speed or let downshift to 2 in DS or M, a click. If coasting at low speed in 2 in DS or M and start to accelerate, a click. Not always but often enough to notice.

Told a indy German shop; they told me wasn't worth the cost of fixing and there was a risk of re-occurrence after fix.

Wondering if this is just an annoyance or a path to a big repair bill someday?

Could be a fix?
