Why do i need to drain the oil for OFHG replacement?

My water pump took a crap last weekend, and parts are coming in today. Naturally the OFHG needs replaced, as does the oil cooler gasket. I've read all the DIY's even the N52 one. It all sounds pretty straight forward although its unbelievable that i need to remove the intake manifold to get one bolt out. I digress; I don't see the reason for draining the oil for the gasket replacement. The oil settles to the bottom minus whats left in the nooks and crannies. If i use a medicine syringe and remove all the oil and suck more using a piece of tubing from the channels, why do i have to drain the oil?

Any help would be appreciated. I just changed my oil about 1500 miles ago. Thanks!

I just performed this DIY 2 weeks ago using edrive90's DIY. Mine is a 2009 6MT with factory oil cooler and what not. A bit more complex than N52.

However, to make you feel better, I also did *not* drain the oil. Didn't see a need to. But I did drain the coolant and you should. You'll be pulling out the oil coolant hose because it is in the way of the 3rd lower OFHG bolt.

How many miles you got on your car by the way?

Just for future searches, i definately did not need to drain the oil, and lost close to nothing doing this. I put some towels over the belts and alternator and didn't have any issues whatsoever.
