Wink 335d with M3 Bits and Tune/JBD

Hey Fellas,

Tongue-in-cheek question that occurred to me while showering this AM:

Should those of us who have sprung for the M3 suspension bits or better, and who also have a tune or piggyback chip, start referring to our cars as a M3D? And maybe get a special badge made up that says M3D? Maybe even set up our own forum? I bet we would need fire extinguishers to put out the forum flames.

Please don't think I'm serious.

You should only spring for the new badge after you get the Lamborghini doors. Of course, our cars would require 2 sets of Lamborghini doors, which would be even more tasteful and refined.

Good grief! I'm way too old for something that looks like that. That's for you younger troops. I need to fly under the radar.

I must admit this does look quite nice, but I wonder if the yellow wouldn't wear on you after a while.

Yeah, you're probably right. So I owe Chau an apology for implying he was dissing PR. I like your interpretation much better.

I heard you can turn any car into an M3 by putting an ///M badge on it, even a 323i or a Honda Odyssey!

F10 M550d...looks like an amazing machine - too bad it is not coming to the U.S. (3 turbos, 381hp, 546 lb-ft!!)

Big can of worms there... BMW is going to introduce a whole line of "M" cars/vehicles, all of which get the badge, but aren't considered hardcore M vehicles. It's rather controversial among the enthusiasts, but I guess BMW sees opportunity in the M badge, and will spread it accordingly.

So here's a question: what if you do it backwards...
Say I purchase a BMW m3, then sell the v8 and dct and retrofit the 550d engine and transmission...must I now remove my m3 badge? Would I have to put the flame suit on before rebranding the trunk as a 335d?
...just a thought

If you go to the German BMW web page, and click on the "M" thingy at the top, you will find the M cars, but not the M550d. If you click on the "5" thingy, you will find five choices, among which are BMW 5er Limousine and BMW M5 Limousine. Clicking on BMW 5er Limousine, you are shown the 17 engine/AWD or RWD choices, the last one of which is the M550d. So BMW is trying to have it both ways. It is not an M Car, but it does have an M in its moniker. You can also get the 550d engine in the Touring, but not the GT. The Touring version, which would be the one I would want if I could get it, starts at 84,250 Euros before you start piling on the options.

That, in a nutshell, is my take on the situation. It appears BMW plan to leverage the crap out of the M brand, diluting its meaning in the process, but increasing high margin sales in doing so. Thus is the way of the auto business.
