Hey i'm gonna bring this thread back because I need help. Parents agreed to get me a watch. I'm 18 turning 19 end of december.

I was looking at Fossil, but then I realized I can get some cheaper Seikos (auto, chrono, and kinetics) and Citizens Eco-Drive's for that price or a little more. I'm new to watches. I just started my indepth reading. Then I am reading about Tissots and Invicta's on various forums and how they are good and have a sapphire crystal so they don't scratch easily.

So I need help. Which maker do I choose? Budget around $150 give or take. Help me out guys please. Thanks.

Glad to see this thread made a comeback.

here's my latest aquisition...and no, it's not a Rolex.

The story behind this watch is the "electric blue" Seamaster was the first Seamaster I can remember seeing, trying on and liking. I've probobly owned a dozen Seamaster variants, but this one is the most attractive, IMHO.

I bought this one new 2 years ago, sold it to a buddy a year ago, and recently traded a couple of lower-end watches to him to get it back.

I also just got a 2nd Orbita watch winder. For those of you who don't know, mechanical watches with an automatic movement will stay wound as long you keep 'em moving (like when you wear them). A watch winder just simulates the motion a watch receives while its being worn...and serves as a dandy place to store and display your watches:

Here's my other Orbita - the Quatro Executive with built in digital clock which syncs to the atomic clock radio signal...perfect for setting your watches too. :rocks: I call it, "the Rolex Condo."

OMG, how funny... the last poster revived this thread in order to ask for advice on a $150 watch and you somehow can't resist showing off your latest acquistion with your infamous wrist shot..

P.S. To the last poster, for your budget I would defintely go with a Seiko..Citizen would be my second choice and fossil is probably the worst in terms of reliability.IF you do decide to go with Seiko, try Ebay, you might be able to find a new Seiko Knetic for around $150 and you'll never need to buy a battery for it

I've got a Pulsar, a Seiko and an Eco-Drive and they're all good watches. They are comfortable to wear and although they don't cost alot (in comparison to "luxury" watches) they don't look cheap.

The Eco-drive is a Calibre 8700. It's got a Perpetual Calendar so you don't have to adjust the date when going from 30 to 31 day month and vice versa. You can find them for around $300-325 or less. I got mine at Christmas last year for under $300.

Way out of that price range but you should try to get it just to see the reaction of your parents is the new watch I just got this weekend. It's the new stainless and 18K gold Tag Heuer that Tiger Woods in wearing in his new ads for Tag. The bezel is solid 18K and the band feels like silk.

^^^As much as I would love to get an expensive watch, and I have the money to, it just wouldn't be the best decision. I'm in college and shit happens. I don't want to lose or have my nice watch stolen. Then I'll feel really bad. I'm looking for something cheap ($150ish). I found a few Tissots, and plenty of Invictas and Seikos, and 1 Titanium simple looking Citizen Eco-Drive for $140 shipped. How are Tissot and Invicta? Seems Invicta is cheap and only some have a sapphire crystal (most are mineral at this price) while all Tissots have them. Seiko has some Hardlex crystal and I'm not sure what the citizen, prolly mineral.

P.S. - I'm only 18, so I've got plenty of time to start my fine watch collection.

I have both Tissot and Invicta. I would go for the Tissot, it's a better watch and the sapphire crystal is great. I really like my Invicta but it is a mineral crystal. A Seiko with "hardlex" crystal would also be a good buy. What style are you looking for? You may want to check overstock.com, I bought my Invicta there for $99 delivered.

I'm reading a lot of people bashing Invicta on some watch forums. They say they don't last a long time and that the customer service sucks if you have to get it repaired. Any truth behind this? Or do people just not like them because they are a submariner replica? Someone also said that the pro diver is the only one they have that is somewhat decent and time tested mechanically. I'm leaning toward Seiko or Tissot.

Tissot's are way more expensive than Invictas (Pro Diver S2 8926 for $66 shipped or 8932 for $55), Others I like are right around a $100). I can pick up a lower end Tissot starting around $140+.

The automatic movement on the basic Invicta is a Miyota Japanese which I believe is made by Citizen. So far my Invicta works well. I still think the Tissot is better. $66 for the 8926 is a great deal though! Unless it is going to be subjected to a lot of abuse, the 8926 is good. Hell, get two for that price!

I'll look into it. All the Tissot's i'm looking at are quartz movement but have a sapphire. The Invictas are automatics but use a mineral. hmm...

Edit: I'm looking for a watch I can wear everyday on everything. I like Tissot's because they are simple and clean looking but they are more business-like/formal. I don't know if it will look out of place on me. (I wear Jeans and a T-shirt or polo 95% of the year)

This is an over year old thread inviting folks to share about their watches. So I did. Funny you couldn't resist making a snide remark instead of just making a positive contribution to the thread.

I do however agree with your recommendation - A Seiko automatic would be a fine choice in the value price segment.

Alright I found some seiko autos starting at $100+. Do you guys like the Seiko 5 or the Seiko 5 Sports better?

Here are some Tissots. I think I prefer the black dial, but the black dial quartz and chronos are too much. All prices include shipping:

Tissot PR50 White Dial Quartz - $130
Tissot PR50 Black Dial Auto - $160
Tissot PR50 Chrono White Dial Quartz - $160

Seiko 5 sports is nice. I would still go with Tissot with sapphire crystal. In that price range you can't go wrong with either one. Both are good values.

Here's the link to the info on Tag's site.
http://www.tagheuer.com/the-collecti...CJF2150.BB0590

Believe or not, the photo doesn't come close to capturing how striking the watch really is in person. The bezel is solid 18K gold, not gold plated and the glass is sapphire crystal. As soon as I saw it I knew I was getting it. Retail on it is $3,500 but I paid less than that.

I got it from a jewerly store called Jared's. They are 1 of only 2 Tag retailers in this area. It's pretty new so some stores won't have it and if they do they may have one in stock. Right now I'm the only person in the state with one that's been sold by Jared's.

Here's the list of Tag retailers in the Boston area. One note about using an authorized retailer is that Tag will not honor the warranty if the watch is not sold by an authorized retailer. The retailer has to sign and date the warranty at the time of sale for it to be honored. Tag does not sell nor authorize the sale of their watches via the Internet (Breitling is the same way), that why you see online dealers only talk about "their" warranty and not Tag's International Warranty.

Will you pay more using a Tag retailer, probably. Will you be 100% sure you're getting the real deal and Tag will honor it if something goes wrong, yep.

Would you take a Quartz Tissot over the auto 5 Sports? Which color dial do you think looks better on the Tissot, white or black?

Here are some choices. Help me pick one guys. I prefer a chrono, but I can't afford an Auto Chrono. So I'll just have to settle for an Auto.
