Any recommendations for a turbo specialist to fix wastegate rattle?

I have a 335i that suffers from the dreaded wastegate rattle. My car is a 2007 so is well of warranty - I asked BMW for a goodwill gesture but they told me go away. So my options at the moment are fairly limited.

Instead of forking out 2000+ for replacement stock turbos that will eventually develop the same problem, I've heard of a few turbo specialists that can rebuild the actuator arm on your existing turbos which will eliminate the rattle and in theory it shouldn't return.

Has anyone had this done and if so by what company?

Many thanks.

Turbo Dynamics are the company famous for this. Not cheap though.

Are you sure it's not vacuum related, can you do Rattle fix via JB/procede...

I replaced with new OEM turbos 6months ago. If in the same position today I would go for Vargas stage 2s from the USA...

Yep Turbo Dynamics were one company I read about, along with Turbo Developments and Engineering.

Funnily enough I purchased the 335i with a JB4, I have yet to try the rattle fix.

You need the new g5 board on the jb4 which offers this fix

I have brand new turbos and they have a rattle... This rattle is going to stay I guess, until I upgrade to a g5 and have the ability to adjust the wastegates

Try JB4 rattle fix first - future use d if I remember rightly..

Upgrading to G5 ISO would be a lot cheaper than replacing the turbos.

Why do new turbos rattle aswell??

Could go for hybrid turbos too Work out cheaper than OEM turbos.

My RBs have a very slight rattle too despite the upgraded wastegate design.

I have rebuilt turbos. They were done twice within the space of a month as the rattle was still there... It is still there!!

In hindsight I would never have bothered getting them rebuilt. Maybe got a JB4 and tried that fix first.

I have the evolve stage2. Is there any other way to adjust the wastgates using the mapping rather than buying a JB4? Maybe I will give them an email and ask.

Just out of interest, have you had to add/upgrade the oil cooler given the RBs will mean higher engine output....only asking for interest sake, I've already spent far too much on the car, the turbos are about the only thing left I can fiddle/replace

This is nuts, how can new turbos rattle unless they aren't set properly? 100%.

It must be finger trouble?

When do they rattle? Start up (cold or hot)? Idle? Overun?

Oil temps are fine for hard road use, never had it on a track so can't comment there. A few companies have bought out an oil cooler thermostat bypass for about $60 which seems to work better than most of the aftermarket oil coolers as far as temps are concerned. So I might use that in the summer if the weather is decent.

+1 on oil temps.

The standard car will overheat the oil on a track on a hot day. Done that. 140 degc.

But with FBO and max road hooning never had any problem, not more than 125 deg.

You just can't use sustained high power on the road for the time needed to overheat the oil.

More like 10 or 20 second blasts on the road intermixed with overrun and coasting.

I guess the rattle is here to stay! Crazy that new turbos still rattle. Apart from the rattle is there anything that this can cause? Loss in performance or potentially can the actuator finally loosen itself to the point where is breaks?

Last week I enquired to Turbo Developments, their prices were 250 per turbo for an actuator fix, or 550 per turbo for refurbished turbos with the actuator fix on an exchange basis.

Mine rattle only on overrun and partial throttle. No rattling on cold start. Before the rebuild they sounded like stirring a bucket of spanners on cold start. I have been assured that there is nothing wrong with the turbos and the rattle is normal by a couple of different reputable sources. Not just the rebuilders.

What do you mean by finger trouble?

I suppose eventually they will fail but it would take a very, very long time. When it gets really bad it can increase the lag due to the actuator having to take up the slack and maybe it can get to the point where it can't fully close at all increasing the work on the turbos with extra heat and the knock on effects of that.

550 per turbo seems like a good price, does it include VAT?

The wastegate are controlled under vacuum.

If you have a bad vacuum leak you will get WG Rattle. It doesnt matter how many new turbos you buy...

Check the vacuum system thoroughly before making any decisions.

Would there be any codes thrown or other symptoms if it was vacuum leak?

I think in my case they checked that first before agreeing to pull them off and rebuild the second time but got to be the best/cheapest starting point.
