I'm not a big fan of the Genesis coupe. It looks good on paper, but feels like your driving a tin can. I have a friend who had a civic si, it's a fun reliable ride. Probably doesn't have the best fit and finish. I've always liked the gti, just a solid fun car. The 325/328 would be the choice if he wanted a nicer interior. I would definitely tell him to drive a brz/frs though before he buys anything.

I'd vote a 350z. Possibly with the HR engine. If he doesn't have stuff to move around every now and then, then the 350z will be a good choice.

I test rode (friend drove) a BRZ, it wasn't all that. The car can handle, but who really pushes a car to the limits other than at a track. It's passing power isn't all too great.

GTI was one of my favorite cars I've owned and one of the easiest manuals to drive. My wife seldom drives manual (though she grew up driving them) but would hop in that car and drive it perfectly and with ease.

I would go with the e46 ZHP, it has a great manual transmission and is as close as you can get to a M3 without buying a M3.

Better have him shop for insurance before making the purchase. If he is young a sports car may be cost prohibitive.

Mustang GT. 2008-09 Bullitt preferably. You might be able to squeeze into a 2010 GT.

Despite what people might think, they are fun cars to drive, and can turn pretty well. Reliable and can take a beating better than most too.

I'm guessing most of you have an aversion to American cars for some reason though.

Meh I'd get a GTI over a 3V, only exception being the Bullitt.

+1 on this. An american sports car can be had for a good price and they are cheap to maintain. Way cooler then driving a civic si I think. The GTI will still have some decent maintinence fees. The genesis is decent, doesn't really do it for me over american cars though.

I'd go 350z. I had one for four years and nothing went wrong with it.

Consider used Golf, Rabbit or GTI. Maybe a used CooperS. Lease returns are a good price bet. If RWD is mandatory, E36/E46.

Definitely get him to a car control clinic (BMWCCA or similar). If he's still a teenager, go with Tire Rack's Teen Survival Driving course. The skidpad & Slalom experience is very useful. Consider getting him into at least one autocross.
