Regular tyres i.e. non run flats....

1.Have any UK owners put non run flats on their cars, and 2.have their been any insurance issues?

I have normal Pirelli tires on my car and have had clarification from Direc Line (my insurers) that it does NOT affect the insurance policy

No insurance issues here either. The only thing that upped the insurance were the 19" wheels that said "normal" tyres were attached to!

i think its strange how technology is ever evolving and we now have these great run-flat technology (and our cars designed to run them) and some of you want to ditch it.. i certainly wont be.

why does everyone on here feel the need to tell there insurance companies about every little mod?

I suppose it's just to be safe. After all, insurance companies are renowned for finding excuses for getting out of paying up for claims. If they find that the car is 'modified' beyond it's standard state, then perhaps it will try to use that as a basis for rejection.

Yes a little, due to their softer sidewalls / greater compliance. However it's not just the rigidity of the sidewalls that makes noise - tread pattern and tire construction makes a big difference too. Some non-RFT tyres are super noisy (Avon ZZ1s for instance), whilst the PS2s and P-Zero Rossos are generally viewed to be quiet. I tried a set of Goodyear F1s a while back on my old car, and thought they were a bit noisy. Grip wasn't that good either.

Comparing the P-Zero Neros (which I have at the moment) to Bridgestone 050 RFT, the Pirellis are a bit quieter - enough to make a quantitative difference IMO

I think we should have been given a choice of runflats or a space saver in the rear.

Runflats are a lot more expensive than normaltyres and seem to be a rarity in some shops i.e.they have to be ordered in. I would find that annoying!!!!!

They have their limitations, for example some people in Australia think run flats are absurd because you are only supposed to drive on them for about 50 miles at 40mph with a puncture, which is difficult /PIA if your in the middle of the outback.

you can do more than 50 mph on them really and for more than 50 miles

You'd be crazy to drive faster than 50mph - not only do you run the risk of delaminating the tire completely off the rim, the traction generated from that tire will be severely different to the rest of the car - therefore at higher speeds you have a hugely increased chance of spinning out due to sudden lack of grip on one corner of the car. Not crazy - just plain stupid.
