Stereo quality

I've returned to BMW after a short break and I'd obviously forgot how poor the quality of the stereo is....

I have the Loud (trade descriptions) stereo bit it's pretty poor.
Never thought id say it, the Audi was much better and I'm not having that!

Surely I'm not alone in my thoughts, what does everyone else do?

Garage List
Audi stereos are brilliant. I had Bose in my A3 which was pretty good, but the standard setup in a 10 year old A4 was stupidly good. I remember when I had an E46 thinking if only my stereo sounded like that!

Mine in my E90 sounds okay but I have Pro Nav and have read somewhere that the amps are upgraded with that so maybe why it sounds ok.

Depends what system you have really.

BMW don't sell a "loud" system, so I'm not sure what system you have in your car, but there a few different ones.

Base system - no amps, no tweeters, 6.5" bass drivers under front seats
Hi-fi system - amp in the boot, tweeters, 8" subwoofers
Logic 7- front centre speaker, better drive units, extra tweeters in rear and a more powerful amp.

Within the base two systems there's slight differences in power output, with the pro navigation system having a more powerful amp module than the hifi system with a standard head unit.

I have the hifi system, with pro navigation, and I really quite like it. Mids are clean and clear, top end is crisp enough and it has more than enough thump to make the bass lines in most music push through nicely. It's not a massively delicate sounding system but its fine for a car. Importantly it has decent bass and goes more than loud enough.

Does your car have the tweeters in the front doors (next to mirrors)? If not you have a base system, and it does sound pretty poor. If you do have tweeters, then maybe you have an issue with the kit, because mine is much more than acceptable and I'm very fussy about these things, as I've been into ultra high end home hifi for about 15 years.

Car has Pro Nav and I have tweeters by the wing mirrors but the stereo is still pretty tinny and pathetic in comparison.
I must have a problem, surely sound quality in cars hasn't been this bad since the 80's??!!

Further info I have established this morning......

Music via Radio and CD is better, although sub standard, but music via iPod USB is diabolical.
No bass whatsoever

For what it's worth, my settings are

Treble at +/-0
Bass at +4
Fade at +3 to the front

I find the if you fade too much to front or rear the bass balance totally dies, the best richness in sound cones from having almost even fade with a slight front bias to keep the soundstage grounded.

As for your iPod, I'd suggest the cable is the issue. Is yours actual USB or do use a charging adapter. The best sound quality comes from the dock connector of the iPod, not the headphone out.

Lastly some iPod etc still apply eq settings when using dock. And this can seriously mess with the sound, so make sure in the settings menu that your iPod has:

1- EQ set to flat or off
2- volume match turned off

Good luck

Thanks, will compare
Car has USB in glove box and USB and Aux in armrest.

It is connected via USB and aux in armrest so info on idrive but sound via aux.
BMW cable so assumed this was right way of connecting??

What is the dock connector you mention? Like the sound of this because problem appears to be the sound going via Aux.

The dock connector is the big plug on the bottom of an iPod. E.g. Not the headphone output.

The headphone output on iPods sounds naff.

Check your eq settings on the iPod if you're using it via the dock

That's ok. Just check the cable is decent quality and that the eq settings are flat on the iPod

There are literally millions of cables on eBay to connect iPod dock connector to an aux in. It's just a dock to stereo jack cable.

I got my Y cable from fleabay and not BMW themselves as the salesman was honest enough (thats rare itself!) to tell me that they sold them for ridiculous money, circa 50, and I'd be better looking on interweb......

Great I thought but now I'm wondering if the poor sound quality is down to the 6.99 cable??!!
Thing is, don't wanna spend circa 50 if it isn't going to be any better

Thats kind of good to hear although it would have been an easy fix!!

I don't know where to go with this and the fact that I also have a problem uploading music via USB (separate thread) means this is really starting to p*ss me off!

It doesn't really help but these links may answer a few questions and save you some money on cables that don't work:

.... possible explanation why:

Apple's Lightning connector won't work without unique chip
