Wow, where to start. That is not an easy question to answer as there are soooo many alternatives. I can help but it will need to be narrowed down with:

1. How much are you looking to spend?
2. What sort of occasion is it?
3. What sort of food do you prefer?
4. Do you want a casual or formal venue?
6. Do you want a generic brand type place or somethig a bit different?

You need to be a bit more specific. There are thousands of restaurants in that area and they will be brimmed on a Friday evening.

Heres a few of the best restraunts IMO. I would put these at the top of the list to go to for all out experience but only if work or a supplier was picking up the bill

Gaucho

Hawksmoor

Roka

Dean Street Town House

Kettners

Hix

Some good suggestions already! However, it all depends on your budget.

If for a special occasion, I would suggest www.bobbobricard.com

That BBR is a good shout and pretty reasonably priced for West End. It is super posh in there, makes you feel like you are in an episode of Downton Abbey. And you have to be wearing a suit.

Better have deep pockets!

Cicchetti is not bad, right in the middle of Piccadilly. You can try quite a lot on their menu too, instead of one large meal.

not on a budget as such, eating out somewhere decent in London always costs....its for the Mrs birthday, seeing a show (5pm) then dinner after, somewhere.
its the first time we've been out out since the boy was born (12 weeks), so wanting to take advantage as such.

Ste - looks good but can only reserve at two sitting times, 6pm or 10pm

If you're not stuck on that area, I can recommend Quaglinos. Not silly money but good food and atmosphere.

To be honest around those area's you mentioned , i don't think there is a top restruant. Burger and lobster is getting all the hype lately due to being cheap for lobsters that is all.

If you're willing to drive then my suggestions are:

Thesev are my favorite ( fine Dine) places:

For Italian (knight bridge)

Apsleys, a Heinz Beck Restaurant - very nice place and the food is very nice too but small portions.

For french (knight bridge)

Koffmann's Knightsbridge- had one of there deals before and was very pleased, some dish were abit salty but the house cocktails is very yum!

For great food (knight bridge)

Dinner by Heston Blumenthal - remember to book at the begingin fo the month when they release the bookings or else it will be very hard to get a table. I think this is one of the best restraunt i've tasted in london. I've been there twice already

For Japanese : (green park )
Sake no Hana - Delicious sushi and starters, Must try the fatty salmon, best sushi i've had in london and especially the raw prawn sushi. i rate this japense very highly and the fact that lots of japanese people goes there would tell you something.

Ignore all other Japanese restaurants in London , they are either super expensive or not worth the bucks for the food.

Don't bother with Gordon Ramsey's. I've tried a few and i don't think it's good at all. Gavin at the windows was the worst fine dinner restaurant for me.

Housed in the Michelin building from 1911 so a nice tie-in for motoring enthusiasts. The food is decent but pricey by my standards. The building is worth a look even if you decide not to eat there. The stained glass windows and mosaics of the Michelin Man are fabulous.
