what tunes are available for N51

So after doing some research and scoping out realoem with my vin, realized that I got a N51 under the hood with the 3 stage intake manifold. that being said, what is everyones opinion on options to go with in terms of tune? I've read good things about AA and have read that ESS also has a tune available for the N51 w/3 stage IM. I currently run 93 so what tune should i look into? I plan on either going with a eurobox or performance intake and PE. I also plan on going with SS or MMW headers if i can find some. Needless to say I was pumped to find I got the 3 stage IM.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but regardless of the fact that you have the 3-stage intake manifold with your N51 motor (as do I), there are very little gains to be had given that you have an XI (as do I).

XI doesn't effect the engine goober, you can still see (and feel) HP and torque gains on an AWD Bimmer.

I was just more excited that I didn't have to buy the IM because I already got it. You're not raining on my parade, I'm not expecting 600whp or anything. Just a project.

any n52 will work with n51. AA for sure works. The only difference is n51 has lower compression than the n52 which is why the n51 has the 3stage to make up the power loss due to low compression. But with the AA tune it uses the 3stage manifold tune AA offers and you get a good amount of gain.

I'm going to try OETuning once I get all my engine mods in place.

I beg to differ, as I'm speaking from experience.

perhaps it has more to do with your vehicle engine being the N51 vs AWD.

it just eats up a lot of power (AWD) and the tune takes a while to really "set in"........Between the gradual increase in power and the fact those front tires are powering the car too it prolly doesnt feel like much if any gain.

But still OP, yes, any N52 tune will work, and you dont even have to buy a 3 stg IM.

saw that you have mmw headers & live in California

jw how you plan on passing your emissions test! Also do you know if there are any noticable gains for removing 2nd cats? I'm getting a PE installed tomorrow and have been debating if I should remove them. Can you comment on these points?

- 1. I wont pass emissions in california (some say I will)
- 2. I wont see any noticable gains (I have an AA tune + Simon tool coming in next week so I'm hoping removing them & having an AA tune will utilize this!)

I'm with Kamek...not much power gain. It shows a few extra HP on my dyno but a few HP makes no difference. If I kicked my wife out of the car I would probably end up with the same result on a 1/4 mile stretch. It does improve throttle response though but that's about it

so what are we talking about in terms of minimal gains?

I don't have them yet. That's my future mods list on the sig. I plan on keeping my stock intake and exhaust when I get around to it so it can help when emissions comes around. Emissions be damned!

You may feel the difference if you're paying very close and careful attention, and then you'll second guess if it's just a placebo affect on your butt-dyno. This is what I meant by raining on your parade -- the included three stage intake manifold in your N51 engine won't help you much, if it even helps at all.

You're speaking in terms of just a tune and the three stage intake manifold right? Add headers and and an eisenmann and your bound to get some more out of it no?

Tune + manifold + headers + exhaust won't even yield you 20 hp to the wheel.

does the n51 motor sucks that much or does the AWD system affect the car that much. Where does the fault go?

AWD reduces the amount of HP to the wheels. Kamek made a thread about his gains a while back I think.

I remember reading that thread. But in theory, those with RWD N51 shouldn't differ from those with n52 RWD w/ the 3 IM + tune or am I still getting that wrong?

It shouldn't, but if you have AWD it will for obvious reasons besides added weight of AWD vs. RWD.
