Improving throttle speed with E90 320i

Hi guys,

I've got a 320i 2005 E90 model and I want to discuss ways of improving the performance of my car (without selling it ). Got the car a month back as it was the only E90 I could afford.

My previous car was a Toyota Corolla 140i so the difference in power is definitely there, I can feel it. But I want to know what I can do to improve throttle response and mid-range acceleration. You guys are the experts, I'm very much in a learning phase right now so any advice would be appreciated.

I've been told a few things to do :

1) Exhaust
2) Remap
3) Chip
4) Changing diff
5) Decatt

If I had to do any one thing on the list, which would give me the greatest improvement ? I realize that I have a 4-cylinder car but I can't make it go like a 325i but I really need good advice as to improving my acceleration.

When I'm on the high-way I don't have any issues with speed as cars usually just get out of my way, but when it comes to speeds from 60-100km, overtaking speeds in particular are a chore.

I know, diesel might have been a better buy but the sound they make ? Horrible. So what do you guys think ? Can I improve the performance to a decent enough level ? Or am I beyond hope ? Thoughts would be appreciated.

Its a piggyback tune that improves throttle response and adds a few horses. Do a search and I'm sure you should be able to find more.

The PBX is for the N51, N52 and N53 (I6?) engines, his is a 4.

So then the PBX won't benefit those with 4 cylinder engines ?

According to BMS, the PBX is designed only for the NA I6 engines. It is however the most bang for the buck mod at this moment for the NA I6.

Damn. Are there any chips like the PBX that is designed for 4 cyl engines like the 320i ? I really need all the help I can get here.

Maybe you can start small, add a high flow oiled filter to replace the stock paper filter and see what happens.

But is there nothing out there designed for 4 cyl engines ? Nothing to help out the smaller folks ? I could always do as you suggest but I have no idea what would change. I might not even notice a difference changing the stock paper filter.

Do the vendors chime in every once in a while ? Is my car simply a lost cause altogether or is it possible to ring out an extra bit of performance without breaking the bank entirely ?

The answer, imho, is changing the diff to a shorter ratio. More expensive, but significant, measurable improvement in acceleration. The engine will spin harder cruising on the freeway, and your mpg will go down. If your car is a 6 speed, the impact is less.

Dude I. Don't think there is hope for u at this time but, all the stuff you listed at the top pluss the filter will do a improvement on response. And you need to do all those changes at once in order for u to feel it.

That is exactly the answer I didn't want to hear. Are there no chip solutions designed for the 320i cars ? Surely there is something like the PBX for 4 cyl cars ?

We don't have the 4 cyl cars in the US, so you're not going to find chips for it here. You may want to check with chip tuning companies in Germany and Europe for a tune for your car.

Sorry, I didn't realize they didn't make 4 cyl cars in the US. I suppose that isn't a bad thing because if you are used to a 325i as your 'entry-level' model, well, the 320i is significantly slower. 110 kw, 200nm of torque. So yeah, I'm in need of help to make the car more frugal...

The 320i is a popular car outside the US, my sister had one in Australia. I've got to think that one of the tuners in Germany or other European countries has a tune for it. You might also try surfing the Australian BMW forums and tuner websites. Good luck. I know that the PBX, along with intakes mods have worked wonders on my car. Look into a shorter ratio for your diff., that will produce quicker acceleration.

I would definitely recommend that you upgrade the exhaust and get a tune for your 325i to improve the throttle response of your vehicle.

I would recommend that you check out the following:
1) Remus Sport Exhaust
2) BMS PowerBox

I'll shoot you over a PM with more details!
