Wastegate rattle fix redneck style

The rattle was driving me crazy.. tried the new g5 firmware 20 and 20D but at any lag setting there was some rattle.

Looked around on the internet and seems like on the VW turbos they use a clip on the linkage to reduce the rattle. So i went to Ace Hardware and got myself a #61 spring for $2.10. Hooked it between the arm and heat-shield. Its a very light tension so it should be fine.

Seems like my rattle is reduced 80% still have some but i think it coming from the front turbo.

I may just have to try this, as a temporary fix.

I'm not sure what's more sad. That is has to come down to this or that it actually worked (BMW look what we have to do to your cars!!!)

Eitherway, good luck with it!

Your dealer will say your turbo is modified so warranty is denied.

It isn't the rod itself which does produce the rattle sound but it's due to the wastegate which does not seal properly?

Not always. The point where the actuator rod mates with the flapper lever gets worn out and goes from being a circular hole to an oval...making the rod end rattle like hell on the flapper lever arm.

Drove the car again tonight and it seems way better. Just a little bit around 3k rpm. Im gonna see if i can do the front one the same way.

Seems like the only solution next to RB turbos

the issue is the JB4. I am as big an advocate as any of terry and his products, but the fact this went undressed for so long was ridiculous.

Nice job! It may not be pretty but you have to admit there's a bit of genius in it.

#61 is the spring stock number in the store. You will see when you get there.

no, it is caused by poor wastegate rattle design of BMW...if this was "just" tune related RB's would rattle bad also.

Another wastegate thread. I don't understand that so so so many people have problems with their turbos or wastegates and bmw does no have a recall on this. How can this be? Clearly, their turbos have a defective part on it, so this should be a recall. What am I missing?

Recalls are generally only enacted when there's a safety concern.

I understand about the safety. I mean this just seems so unfair to the consumers because obviously these turbos have a defective part on it (it's safe to say that when this many people are experiencing the same exact problem) and bmw should replaxe these with better ones. Turbos are not suppose to have these issues, especially early on, so bmw should just step up and recall these darn turbos. Their customers are spending 60k dollars on their cars and the turbos are crap.

I'd like to try this. Was it easy to get to the rear turbo? Did you have to take any parts off the car to get to it? Thanks
