Another N54-Meth-engine Failure at the track? (Video)

Was at Gingerman Raceway today, for an evo sponsored track day. There was another 335I there that was just like mine (same color, mileage, etc), except mt with different mods. He had: Dinan Stage 3 software, Dinan CAI, Intercooler, Dinan oil cooler, Dinan LSD, full Dinan suspension kit, Catless DPs (brand?), a Meth Kit (brand?), and Michelin PSCs. he's been to track events in the past, and we went head to head, and he was faster by a second. Now he was using meth, and was pouring it into the windshield reservoir all day. He claimed he just recently started using meth, because it helped him control temps at the track.

A guy with an evo on continental slicks who he hung with, came to chat with us later in the day, and we all decided to go out for our last session, and have a little three way battle for fun. I fitted the guy with the Dinan 3, with my go pro, since he didn't have any, and I suggested that he go in front of me, since he won our earlier battle, and stood the best chance of beating the evo. During our warm up lap, I smelt a strong burning smell, which I thought were from my nittos, oddly enough. Then I saw lots of black smoke from the dinan3 in front of me. Thought nothing of this. As our first lap begun, the Dinan3 pulled up, and let me by, to chase the evo as he would shift into gear, give it gas, and the car would just rev. He got black flagged out as, the corner worker also saw smoke coming from his engine bay. He left the track, and was going to try and get the vehicle to his BMW dealership. My theory is that the Meth kit failed, and the motor went, but we'll find out whats up, after the dealer has had time to inspect the motor. Here's video of the incident. Motor appears to go at: 0.29. You can see him wave me by at: 0.45

My understanding is the N54 has a design "flaw" if you call it that when you are cornering hard left as the engine will starve itself of oil in sustained conditions.

Sounds nothing like a "meth failure"..... More like a burnt up clutch. If the car still revs what makes you thing the engine is blown?

Mine as well blame it on the gasoline at this point. Still don't understand what this has to do with meth. Pretty bold assumption imo

Considering he was just running a Dinan stage 3 tune(not nearly aggressive enough to require meth or racegas) meth having anything to do with it is extremely unlikely. There would have to be enough meth flow to hydrolock the engine which is unlikely because you would expect to "load up" on meth and begin misfiring before that would occur.

By the sound of the engine(can't see the tach clearly) it sounds like it just "free revved" which would indicate the clutch shit the bed, like j1gilles said.

It's 100% that his clutch took a shit. That burning sensation can be attributed to a bad clutch. Also you can CLEARLY see he is in gear and free rev'ing, thus the gears weren't catching and he couldn't do anything. How many miles on the dinan3?

108K miles. Not sure how long he had the dinan package installed, but Clutch was the very first thing I told him when I went up to him afterwards. He didn't think it was his clutch at all. That's why I started to think it was the meth, similar to what happened to sneaky. The corner workers said they think it might have been the rotors burning up the brake lines. Everyone came up with a different theory, but we were all focused on how to get him home safe.

yeah weird that anyone watching this video would think its a meth failure...what would make you think that? if there was a burning smell then how would that attribute to a failed meth kit? wouldnt u just smell straight meth...or if you smelled burning then shouldnt there be a fire?

i agree its the clutch since you clearly saw him drive to the pitstop and was revving pretty hard.

also what controls the meth kit on dinan tune?

He has 108K miles, with loads of track use, I have 106K. My motor has held up better than my buddies S65, which has already had bearings replaced.

Dinan doesn't use meth at all. Owner rejected clutch theory, which again was the first thing I told him. Car is at the dealer. I'll find out what the diagnosis is.

well when he was revving to red line was the clutch pushed in?

You can run a third party meth kit. Company's like vishnu, BMS, cobb ect just have integrated meth control to make it life much easier. I ran a separate meth kit with my vishnu and just tuned for it up until recently when i installed their kit. It's actually safer in his position since the dme isn't adding timing and boost while depending on meth and cooler iat. He's just not getting the full potential of its Benefits
