Test drove some Audi's

So my friend is looking to buy a car and we were looking at some Audi A4's in the 2005/7 range.

I like the look of the Audi as much or more than my E90. I thought the interior was comparable, I liked the steering wheel much better than mine, and the suspension was far superior.

It goes downhill quickly from there:

1. There is no clutch feel and the clutch is far to light.
2. There is no "progressive" brake feel. Nothing compared to the E90.
3. The shifting did not feel linear at all. 2nd to 3rd was not smooth.
4. The steering felt light and synthetic. Darn near Japanese. The steering was the worst aspect of the car.
5. The E brake is under the armrest and forces the arm rest up and then to put the arm rest down you have to pull all the way up and then back down again.

Take away:

Audi's are nice cars but the driving experience is far to synthetic, nothing like a BMW. If the F30's feel soft like this then BMW has done itself a great disservice. I hope they do not.

VW does a lot of parts bin sharing with Audi and I agree that the clutch is really light. You do get used to it though and it's nice if you're caught in traffic. I typically prefer a heavier clutch pedal though.

I know I'm a broken record since I say this so much, but based on what you said about the Audi's steering, you won't like the electric steering in the newer Bimmers. Ride quality is better, but maybe to a fault for some because there's more body lean, etc. I'm personally okay with the softer-feeling suspension in the new F30. The steering is what bothers me to no end. Nearly everything else is an improvement in my book. Well, the lack of an NA I6 is also a HUGE bummer.

I've driven about 4 F30's 328's and the feel isn't nearly as comparable to the E92. Though I have yet to drive a an F30 335 so I can't be totally biased.

I test drove an S5 prior to buying my BMW and must admit I was underwhelmed. The clutch on that car however is very heavy and shifts were smooth and silky. In fact everything about it was silky, but to a flaw. When you get on it, you can't hear a thing! I just felt very disconnected driving it, even with a manual transmission.

It's the same story, obviously the N55 is a pretty strong motor, but the weak points of the car (steering feel, general feeling of laziness) remains from the 328. It's a very good car, probably still class leading, but it's not in the same ballpark dynamically to the E46 or E9x. IMO.

Just goes to show it's all personal preference. All the negative things people mentioned here are positives for me for the most part.

I guess I seem to be in the minority here... but the Audi interiors just don't do it for me. Same with the F30. I guess I just like the simplicity of the E92, my two cents.
