When my son drove his Isuzu Rodeo V6 with the oil light on for a few days, it started making noise very much like the one in your video. Ended up to be the rod bearing. had to get a whole new (used) engine for that thing.

Did they check for codes? ie low oil pressure/low oil codes? I would document everything. Its a rod bearing in my opinion and it was probably due to the shop forgetting to fill it up with oil after the OC install. Back in my early 20's I was a Ford tech paying my way through college and I know of at least 10 cars that were driven without oil after a repair...It happens! (I did it once myself)

FUUUUDGE! Probably the culprit then. No word from BMW surprise surprise. Not sure about codes. There wasn't any CEL when I got it back or while I drove it. I checked the oil level via dash, on my drive home yesterday and it said max. Doesn't mean they didn't drive it low. They said they only put a quart in after the install. My bet is that new cooler holds at least 2 or 3 quarts on it's own.

If the shop that did the accident/oil cooler repair fudged it up, I would bring it to the attention of your insurance company. The shop is supposed to bring it up to spec before the accident and your insurance company might be able to charge them for any further repairs due to negligence. Good luck.

Without seeing the car in person and actually hearing it, it's hard to say for sure what's going on.

My advice to you, though, is this: Make sure you give the Service Advisor (and maybe the Tech/Shop Foreman directly) the whole picture of what happened with the car. It will make things much easier for them in figuring out what happened and what the damage is. Don't just drop it off and say "my engine is making noise". Tell them about the accident, the oil cooler repair, etc.

My guess is that it is internal engine damage and was possibly caused by being run low on oil or some type of oil starvation issue. I've never heard an N54 make a sound like that, though. Maybe you'll get lucky and it's something external (something on the accessory drive), but it doesn't sound like it.

So full story... Car was in front end accident with guard rail (my fault) I called insurance made a claim, they gave me a list of approved places one of which is the hendrick collision which is where I took it. As they were doing repairs I told them some of the parts ie: angle eyes, front grill, and reflectors were aftermarket from m0db...ns. They said no problem. I asked if it was possible to order aftermarket parts in place of oem they said sure. We talked about a carbon fiber hood and maybe an M3 rep bumper they suggested not to go that direction with fitment issues I agreed. Then we talked about an upgraded oil cooler they said no problem. We ordered the ER from m0db... They did the repairs and installed the oil cooler. They sent me an email Thursday of last week asking what oil I used since they needed to add some after the oil cooler install. They detailed it Friday and I picked it up first thing Monday morning drove it for the day and noticed the noise.

Brought it back to the collision place first thing this morning, they put in a quart with fingers crossed. Then sent me to BMW dealership also "Hendrick" and there it sits.

Car drove and rode fantastic all day yesterday, I never went WOT but drove with some spirit, just noisy loudest during a feathered or light throttle.

Car is a 2009 with 75,000 miles. Previous fixes have been a valve cover gasket, and a intake valve cleaning 6,000 miles ago.

Mods prior to accident: AA Bov, AA catback, BMS DCI, Procede 2.5 v5, Lowered on H&R race springs, full M3 interior swap (bamboo), Is diffuser, and factory M-sport package. Wife has hated the car since day 1 now that it's been MIA she says she misses it, go figure.

Car is now stock besides the ER oil cooler, and AA catback.

Bring your insurance company in the loop if things head south... Document everything...

Maybe too much oil was put in? Don't know what that would sound like or do so just a WAG.

Who is they? The shop that installed the OC? You better not be paying for that...

Do you have any vids showing the car running normally before the accident? Was it drivable when it was brought into the body shop? You may need to show that the engine was fine before the accident but after it made this noise. Then it will be between your insurance co and the shop to fight over how it was broken, during the accident or during the repair.

One thought is that if the old oil cooler was bent in the accident it might have restricted the flow long enough to cause sufficient oil starvation. Just a guess.

I still have possession of the old oil cooler, damage was mainly to the support bracket and a slight bend in the core, Oil lines were fine. I would assume the oil lines are under pressure? If there was a restriction the oil would not flow through the lines and just remain in the engine.

Even if I wanted to, with the new oil cooler installed warranty is out of the question.

Not necessarily, being upfront with the dealership and shop can go a long way. Especially if the defect isn't in any way related to the cooler.

Also, I wasn't implying that you were at all gung ho to try and commit fraud, I was responding strictly to the post recommending you do.

Modder, OEM guy, whatever, shitty is shitty and I feel for you, situation just sucks all around and I have no intention of rubbing salt on wounds.

Check the pulleys and belts. Mine made a similar noise and it came out to be that.

BMW Engineers screwed this one up, you have to drop the sub frame in order to remove the oil pan hence the 8 hr quote.
