What exactly causes this?

Why is this such a problem on our cars?

You'd think that with these cars running so hot, shit would just burn off. ???

Im pretty sure this will happen after even as little as a few thousand miles... Makes me not even want to clean them :C


I will probably try to do it soon since im at 85,000 and never cleaned them, then again at 120,000 miles. If I still have the car 150,00o miles. Its to expensive to clean at short intervals.

It's not just our cars. It's all cars with direct injection engines. All engines have blow-by gases, and oil vapors that are sucked out of the crankcase and fed back into the intake. Those gases, mixed with oil vapors will condense and settle in the intake manifold and on the intake valves.

With port injection, fuel is mixed with air in the intake and injected over the intake valves, essentially washing the intake and the valves, so no deposits are left behind.

With direct injection, only air is injected over the valves, and fuel is injected directly into the cylinder, never even touching the valves. So those deposits are allowed to settle, harden and buildup, and over time this will happen. You saw my pictures.

Seems to me that someone needs to invent a fix to this problem.

An oil catch can will only help a bit? Are there drawbacks to an oil catch can?

I promise your going to have carbon build up Wedge....I'm curious to see how much though but it will def blow your mind by not having it done for 70+K miles... Your car will run waaaayyyy smoother too

I'm sure it will help but it doesn't fix the problem totally. Oil still gets past your turbos and you'll be breathing/smelling a lot more oil vapors than normal.

It will help a little. If your car is strictly a daily driver, it will help very little. If you track your car, it will help a little more. The drawback, as SharkBait said, you will smell and breathe more oil vapors, and your cabin filters will get fouled up faster.

I'm sure it couldn't hurt, but I'm still skeptical that it will make that much difference in the car's performance. Does it really reduce the air flow to the point it can reduce performance? I know I have complained to the dealership about idle and how it's not smooth. Sometimes it feels like it miss fires and the engine will shake the car. That could be injector related also. But, like I said, I'll find out soon enough. Just wish the dealer had this, I would push harder for them to do it under CPO, but they only do chemical cleaning.

At 26k I had a misfire that was directly related to carbon build up. I went in for new plugs, then all new injectors, then even coil packs got replaced, still there... Finally my SA spoke with BMW NA and got the green light to do walnut blasting under warranty. I still remember picking up the car and driving it home, and feeling like I had just bought a new N54 again. It'll be more noticeable with your idle, as well as how smooth your acceleration is. You should do a before and after dyno just to see, that would be pretty interesting after 70k miles

Wow, I'm having rough idling and feel like loss of power and was having a misfire with my Cobb... I'm at 32K miles and I'm really thinking this could be it... any idea?
