Key Fob for Sale

BIMMERPOST / Classifieds
Asking Price:
None

Extra Key fob for sale. This has never been programmed and the key is uncut. I bought this online and was going to have it programmed and cut, but I found my spare key before I had the chance to do so. From what I understand, it can be programmed by holding it in the slot for 20 seconds, but the key would actually have to be cut by the dealership. Should work if your key looks exactly as below (See Attached Images) . If interested, please shoot me a PM.

From what the guy at the dealer told me, once the key has been programmed to a car then it needs a special tool. If it's never been programmed, then it can be done that way.

As far as I understand, yes and no to what the dealer said.

The guy at the dealership is probably referring to the fact that if you had gotten the "blank" key fob from a dealership, the transponder on the key would be one which is already trusted by your car (CAS), and so you can just pop such a key into your particular car and "program" it easily (just updates the CAS and key so that the rolling codes match, the CAS registers that this is one of the active keys, etc).

On the other hand, since you got this online, the transponder (think of this as the id of the key) is definitely not in the trusted list in your CAS (BMW programs each CAS from the factory to trust 10 or so fixed transponders; that's why every time you get a key from them they ask for your VIN, and it takes time to get it, as opposed to them just opening up a drawer of blank keys and handing you any one). So, in short, a tool is required to change the CAS in order to use this random key that you got online.
