Sorry to hear that mate.

Couple odd quick questions. Was the odb port bug dealer disabled?

Wheel locks?

This is very close to work! Although I've never been a fan of Hayes (NO offence).

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. What were the circumstances? Did the car have the relevant security updates applied to the car?

Get a few photos of the car up, a picture speaks a thousand words...

I hope the police find/don't find (*) your car!

* Delete as appropriate.

Cheers...

The question still remains for the two who had their cars stolen this past week, whether or not they had the BMW security update in place.

The other guy completely avoided the question for some reason.

Likely because it hasn't been done and they're embarassed. Either that or they somehow didnt know about it.

If cars were being nicked with the security mod, there'd be uproar!

That said, we're not heating about many security modded cars and failed attempts either.

Cars ARE being nicked with the security update. Reason being the update has done nothing to stop it.

Dave, not sure on the truth of it, but two different dealers near me have all said that when initially released, the update just stopped the courtesy window drop but was then re-issued to change the way that keys are added to the system.

Best bet is still to do as much as you can to stop it though.. The update alone may not help you keep your car. Not having an obd port on the other hand...

why cant the port just be disabled and why the hell isnt it encrypted with a 256bit key

Bmw suck. Stealing cars with blank keys has to be worse than being hot wired like the old days

I'm only aware of this security up date after reading these threads over the last couple of days, but don't actually know anything about it.

What exactly is done with the update, and what does it actually do?

Also, is there a way of checking if this update has been done, or would I have to ring the dealer?

I have an early '08 e92 so I think if I'm right it would be affected??

Yep, def affected.

Initially it just made the windows not drop when they jammed a screwdriver into the lock. Now they say it actually changes the way that you program a new key to the car.

If you're not sure if its been done then it probably hasn't. BMW UK are meant to keep a record of all the VINs that have been done so you could always give them a buzz.

So what's the score with older cars? Heard it said that the issue doesn't effect pre march 2007, so a 56 plate e92 wouldn't have the issue? Don't nicer stand why this would be the case
