I have an M3 i am working on today.

I will take some pictures of the gear knob as it has the exact same one. We can compare how it lights up

Unless it's changed, the M3 shifter isn't quite the same. Where the M5 knob has the arrows with +/- markings, I think the M3 one just has up/down triangles. Happy to be corrected though.

Looks fantastic Paul.

Can you kindly PM me with full details of what the retrofit needed, where you bought the parts from including the wiring etc and whether it is a DIY job? and the price, of course
Cracking thought, seriously good stuff!

Hey Paul,
Just did my wiring yesterday which took a while! Question is, my m5 gear knob doesn't have that stick / stem which the normal gear stick comes with....... Am I missing a part!? How will it engage with any of the gears?

Also, how did you take off the leather trim the m5 gear stick came with?

Sam

You mean the yellow plastic bit? That's just connected to the trigger underneath the normal shifter and locks it in Park. With the M5 shifter you just don't have the trigger - as soon as you put your foot on the brake you can move the 'box out of Park.

I cut the leather gaiter off the M5 knob - but I cut mine a bit too short. Are you planning to reuse the stock boot or are you fitting a new one? Either way, leave enough of the M5 leather to give a good overlap with the gaiter that's attached to the car. Mine is a quarter of an inch short and I wish I'd thought it out a bit better before I started cutting!

Thanks a tonne Paul for this and the PM.

Yes I was referring to yellow plastic bit btw.

Also, I plan to use a second hand oem boot which I bought off eBay. If all goes to plan then my genuine performance boot trim and hear stick will be for sale.

Ok so what you cut the m5 trim, how did you get it to sit in place once you overlapped it to the boot trim? Did u stick / sew?

Thank you again.

Sam

If you leave enough of the M5 boot, when you tuck it inside the stock boot you shouldn't need to stick it. There's enough stiffness in the shape to stop it all collapsing. If your skills extend to sewing leather, that would be the best solution but it's a bit of a job apparently!

Hey Paul,
My m5 gear stick won't illuminate. It came with its own plug which I've not attached to anything.... Any ideas?

See plug to the left in black.... I don't have anywhere to connect to... Unless I now have to cut the wiring on it and rejoin elsewhere, in which case..... Where to?

Not sure what you've done there...

The wiring loom you've made up should have 5 connectors on. 2 of those go between the existing blue plugs, 2 between the existing white plugs, and the 5th connects to the gearstick loom.

From the original DIY:

I have the exact same loom, however the gear stick loom for m5 is a 9 pin connector (that plug connector you see hanging about).. Not sure where that is married upto...

I've just spotted your problem, Sam.

That's not the M5 shifter... At least, not the same one I have.

you need to buy another female connector and rewire the m3 knobs wire like the m5 one and connect it all up

there is extra 3 wires which you can fix together as the 3 wires are new seperate light power lines.
