Car Overheating, Stranded On Highway. Any Advice Is Great!!

So I was driving on the highway and all of a sudden I get a red symbol which translates to engine overheating in the manual.

So I pull over to whatever space I had on the left lane and let the car cool down and poured some water. After about an hour I turned the car and managed to almost reach home when the same thing happened again, this time I had to tow it to my mechanic.

The car jumps a little and sometimes even vibrates.

Any reason why this happened? I really don't it to the pump? And why would this happen all of a sudden, out of nowhere.

I have an 07 328i coupe, almost 95k.

Please help!! I am strapped on cash!!

You have a dead water pump. Very common. Do NOT continue to drive the car. Have a new pump installed (or DIY). The pump itself is outrageously expensive, but you can cut a lot on the price by getting one online at getbmwparts or many of the sponsors of this forum. Have the thermostat replaced as well it is attached to the water pump so the work should be free.

Most of us have been there, don't panic, and do NOT drive the car further. You'll just increase the bill later down.

Mine just failed at 76k. I drove it to the dealer in 10 minute sessions with 30 minute cool downs between.

Thanks man, really appreciate that. I did drive on it after the car cooled down but I really had no other choice since I was working and would have taken the tow truck forever to come by.

Hopefully that is all I have to fix, knock on wood.
