Day 1 - Got a late start. 10 or 10:30am. Severna Park MD to Lebanon TN, just shy of Nashville. About 673 miles. Filled up at the 558 mile point. Took 13.965g. 40 mpg. I was pretty much obeying the speed limit + 5, sometimes +10 when the speed limit was 70. Around the DC beltway, out I66 to I81. From now on until Wed night I will be on I40. Car feels good, but not working very hard. One merge onto I40 after the refill I was up to 90 mph rather quickly. These cars do want to move out. Tomorrow night I will stay at Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City if possible as I have an early Wed AM meeting in Norman before heading out to Albuquerque.

Day 2 - Lebanon, TN to Norman, OK, about 711 miles. Filled up car today with 15.068g with 585 miles on the tank, for 38.82 mpg. Ran the A/C a lot today as it was mighty hot: 98-100 most of the afternoon. May I recommend that you do not go through Nashville during morning rush hour. That may have affected the mileage a bit. The Valentine One came in handy a few times, although I am generally not a regular speeder. Just in selective bursts. Anthropomorphically, I think the car is enjoying being taken for a long drive. Tomorrow my destination is just a few miles shy of Albuquerque.

My best long distance MPG was 37.1. I had an average speed of 75mph.

Looking good. Will we be seeing pics of your journey soon?

Planning a trip soon from SoCal to Napa and back. Hope I can at least break 30mpg which is next to impossible with my average commute these days.

+1 for some pics

If you're in the mood for sweets around Albuquerque check out Golden Crown Panaderia. Hopefully the gentleman who started it is still running the place. Great little family-owned bakery and coffee house with notoriously stellar empanadas.

What is the intended direction thereafter? Kay's country kitchen in Orcutt, CA may very well make it into your top 5 best breakfasts you've ever had category. I know its the top of mine, but you've had a few more years under your belt than I It's not far from Vandenberg AFB if you want to drum up some business while your out there.

Travel safe!

Nice mileage. I just put the 17" Conti SSR tires on for a road trip to Bay area. NM has great food.

Day 3 - Norman, OK to Edgewood, NM. From one frat brother's house to another's. not sure of the distance; about 550 miles. I'll try to edit this tomorrow AM. On my fill up today in Amarillo I got 38.6 mpg. I think my mileage will decline a bit as climbing the eastern side of the continental divide at 80 mph is not great for mileage. Haven't seen but a couple of bimmers on the road the whole trip; strange. the USA is a big place. Yes am retired USAF.

Day 4 - Today drove from near Albuquerque to Pagosa Springs CO. 214 miles. No fill up today. Now the car needs a bath. It's never been this dirty. Fun drive through the mountains. Nothing particularly challenging.

Nice! Impromptu or planned? Not to hijack too much, but curious how long ago did you retire from the AF?

This was a long time in the planning as I understand it, by the Denver chapter. I was in the AF from 1966 to 1997; 12 active and 19 reserves. The guy who performed my retirement ceremony was an old AF buddy from Germany. He and I used to ride BMW motorcycles over there. His was a 1974 R90/6 and mine was a 1973 R75/5. We used to drive them over to the Nurburgring to watch F1 (Jackie Stewart era). Other venues and classes too. Good old (glory) days.

I forgot to mention the most important bit. The car performed like a rocket ship climbing Route 160 from 7000 ft at Pagosa Springs to about 10000 ft at Wolf Creek Pass. It hung with the big boys without breaking a sweat.
