Day 9 - filled up the tank before I left. Due to rapid driving up mountain passes and rather brisk driving on various back roads, with multiple bursts between 90-110, I only got 30.94 mpg. It was only a 202 miler using 6.5 gals. To prepare for today I soaked in the mineral hot springs last night.

Today I only went 85 miles as the crow flies but took 350 road miles to get from Pagosa Springs to Mancos, Co. That's near Mesa Verde National Park.

I went 46 miles north on US160, going up over Wolf Creek Pass again. The took a left on CO Rt 149 for 116 miles until it terminated at US50, going over Spring Creek Pass (10,898 ft) and Slumgullion Pass (11,530 ft). Some fun driving through the twisties, leaving all others in the dust. Got to chase a local for a while in some model of Benz. Anyway, then US50 to Montrose, CO followed by heading south on US550 to Durango. Us550 went through Ouray and Silverton. After Ouray the twisties are spectacular. You dasn't screw up on that road; no guard rails. I love this car. At Silverton I stopped for a bio break and some guy in a Toyota 4Runner asked me how I liked my oil burner. I said how did you notice; he said he was a car guy. After Durango I headed west on US160 to Mancos where I will rest for the night. Here are a few pics from today.

Day 10 - today I drove 308 miles, starting at Mancos, CO and ending at Monticello, UT, via Kayenta AZ. Along the way I stopped at Mesa Verde National Park and Monument Valley. Mainly from Cortez CO to Kayenta AZ I was able to get some decent high speed cruising in when there was no one coming or in front of me as far as I could see. Some good 90-110 mph cruising. Blow out that carbon I say. I filled up today at Cortez. That tank was mainly the previous day's mountain jaunt. 415.2 miles with 10.606g for 39.15 mpg. I was quite surprised. Will be interesting to see what today's mpg is like with the high speeds and A/C on. It was high 90s Fahrenheit most of the today when not at altitude in Mesa Verde NP. Pics will be edited in.

Been too whipped to do any postings, so will just give a summary of Day 11 through today.

Day 11 - Monticello UT to Hill AFB UT via Moab and Arches National Park. Filled up near Price UT and got 35.9 mpg for the jaunt to there from Cortez CO in high temps and speeds.
Day 12 - Hill AFB to Jackson WY. Topped off before I left and got 44.7 mpg for that small fill up. Hiked in Tetons in afternoon when I got there. A deer encounter.
Day 13 - Jackson WY to Cody WY. Early AM pics of old settlements and buffalo herd in Tetons, then on to Jellystone. Timing was off for Old Faithful, but since been there done that I bagged it and kept going. Saw other geothermal delights and a fire that I hope doesn't worsen. The road east out of Yellowstone to Cody is one I have never done before. Rather spectacular geological display. Interesting road to drive. Was riding with about 8 Harleys for a lot of the time. Filled up in Cody after 536.9 miles from Hill AFB. Got 44.3 mpg. Wow is all I can say.

This car is really amazing: looks, performance, economy. Hope it lasts. It really wants to be driven hard and long. Took her to a car wash this evening.
Having said all this, I admit I am getting tired and stiff. Pics later.

Might be too late, but Beartooth Pass is an All American road, and supposedly amazing. It's in that area.

May be the same road, but US 16 east out of Tensleep WY to Buffalo was outstanding.

That's a lot of miles there sir, even for a spry young buck such as yourself! I'd be whipped too...glad to see the car being put to such a fantastic use though.

How many miles have you racked up so far? When you get back, we'll have to try to organize a "welcome home" diesel meet!

Day 14 - Cody, Wyoming to Ellsworth AFB, SD, 450 miles, including a stop at Devils Tower National Monument. Hiked around the base. Didn't see anything unusual, but heard some strains of some synthesised music. Maybe it was all in my head. The road east from DT, US 14, to where it links up with I90 was a lot of fun. There were two Harleys who seemed eager to get by, so I let them go by and then chased them at a polite distance all the way to I-90. I wish I could have thanked them afterward. These were pretty much full hogs without all the saddlebags. I am not sure who was teasing who, but it was no problem keeping up with them. It was way less challenging than a decent HPDE. They seemed to have more trouble in the turns than I did. I felt like I could have run away and left them, but I could be wrong. Other than that fun, speed limit on I-90 was 75 mph, so I went around 80-82 mph. Very few polizei. Got 38.71 mpg on this leg. One pic already posted.

Day 15 - I love my car but this day was rather long feeling. About 530 miles from Ellsworth AFB (Rapid City SD) to Offutt AFB (Omaha). Via Badlands National Park. I had insufficient energy and time to add Mt Rushmore. If you wonder what the Badlands are like, imagine your yard in your worst nightmare. Mileage declined today: 34.91 mpg. 40 miles stop and go in the park, and then about 80 mph the rest of the way. A few marginal pics. Too lazy (tired) to format the good ones.

Day 16 - Offutt AFB (Omaha) to Nauvoo IL; basically 300 miles off interstate (US 34 mainly) but I did several side jaunts nearer to the Mississippi River so probably more like 350-375. I forget to check the odometer. No fill up. Mainly a low stress ride through the Iowa farmlands. Interesting historical towns in eastern Iowa. Here are some pics.

Days 17-21 - Spent the day in Nauvoo and in Carthage for Day 17. Day 18 I drove to Chicago where my daughter lives near O'Hare. Filled up along way. Got 41.3 mpg on that tank, which was lazy US highway and Interstate driving across Iowa and rural Illinois. Picked up my wife at O'Hare. Day 19 we went on a Chicago River Architecture Cruise. Day 20 we went to one of the funkier neighborhoods Wicker Park. Day 21 (today) was a lazy day; we went over to Wilmette near the lake for a bit. Not much driving to report. Attached are a few pics.

Day 22-23. Final entry. Day 22 was spent lazing about my daughter's house, washing clothes, etc. Real interesting for you guys. Day 23 was the drive back from Chicago to my home near Annapolis. Total of 718 miles on the odometer, making for a total of 6,356 miles for the whole trip. Car is now overdue for its second service according to the onboard computer. Left Chicago at around 10:30am and arrived home around midnight. Thought about staying overnight near Breezewood exit on I76 in PA, but didn't feel like unloading the car. Filled up at 6:30p in OH, with a total of 611.8 miles on the tank, for a 40.01 mpg. Car worked flawlessly the whole trip. Was a great road trip car. The only thing I could fault it on is the "storage configuration", which is partly due to some of my own decisions. I chose to purchase a donut style spare to complement my Michelin PSS non-RFT, so that takes up some room. I also took along a bunch of various consumables and cleaning supplies, just in case, so they took up more room. Short summary is that there wasn't enough room in the trunk for all my 3-week trip stuff, although if I had used two small duffles instead of one 75L one I could have probably stuffed in all in the trunk. Car was comfortable enough considering the stiffness associated with long drives every day. The settings on the JRZ RS1s seemed to be about right for the trip: 12 rear 14 front. They now have about 14K miles on them, so may have softened up a bit. I probably will tighten them up for the HPDE at the end of September. All in all, this is what the car is all about. Yeah, it's fun as a daily driver, but it really wants to be out on the highways and byways, and I wish I could have driven it even higher in the rev range for the long hauls, meaning 90-110 mph for long stretches instead of 75-80. Will probably never really know whether this trip has helped postpone the fouling of the internals or not. The car hasn't asked for a "booster" of DEF yet. Tires seem to be holding up reasonably well at 12K miles; I suppose I should rotate them. What rotation scheme would you suggest? No pics for this last post.

Nice work Jack-- glad you made it safely, it was great to meet you.

I still can't believe you made the drive out West.

For everybody following, Jack won the furthest distance travelled to our BMW meet at a whopping 1800 miles:
