335i 6MT: Average Life of Stock Clutch?

Just wondering if anyone can chime in on how long their original clutch has lasted on 335i 6MT (also - please state if tuned or not).

I'm at 59k and my clutch seems OK. I'll have coverage on that item for another 18 months (maintenance plan). I'm actually hoping it goes before then. Otherwise I may not get my money's worth out of the maintenance plan. Actually I would have declined had it not covered the clutch disc.

I have a 2007 e90 6MT and the clutch got disintergrated at around 50k miles... Mine was complete stock at the time and I do not abuse it. The friction material shattered and bits and chunks could be found sitting at the bottom of the transmission casing when we took it apart to replace it. The friction material was also very close to completed depleted regardless whether or not the clutch failed. Oh, and ya, before it shattered, the clutch drove fine and holds power no problem at all, so you can really tell that it's wearing unless you actually grind through all of the friction material. Currently I'm at ~75000 miles on the stock clutch. (Running 18PSI tapering to 14PSI, aftermarket intake, intercooler, and charge pipe)
Recently I've noticed a chattering vibration in the pedal when taking off in first gear while the car is cold. Other than that it's fine. I'm told that's one of the first symptoms of a failing clutch or even a failing DMFW. Clutch holds fine under power in any gear.

makes me wonder why the hell mine went so early =( and as i say, not modded, not abused...

Yours was obviously a freak accident or manufacturing defect, an outlier. no good clutch, unless abused should fail that catastrophically.

Thanks for the info guys! Hopefully we'll get some more responses and be able to come up with a meaningful median mileage value for clutch wear-out.

My E39 528i made it to 144k on the original clutch, but that engine only put out 207 lb-ft torque. With the N54's torque I would expect the clutch to last about 1/2 - 2/3 as long.

Yes. Mostly highway, about 65%~70%. However the clutch was still fairly strong without any sign of slippage when I sold it.

My 14 year old E36 survived for 200K+ miles on the original clutch too. I lived in DC (inside the city limits), so the majority of miles on it were city miles.

There are, in my mind only three possible causes to your clutches early demise:
  • Poor clutch workmanship/materials in its manufacture
  • The manner in which it's been operated/maintained
  • Aliens
All the best and good luck; I hope the repair isn't too expensive. I'd be curious to know what you find once you've had the matter resolved. I too have a 6MT.

These clutches like that of most previous BMW's should last a very long time. I have 110k of my 2011 e90 and no signs of any clutch issues. My previous e46 daily driver had over 300k on its original clutch. My 2005 M3 has 178k on it and I track that car with its original clutch.

Most issues with clutch failure are defective workmanship or driving method.

I have an 2007 e90, completely stocked. I got it in 2010 with 42k miles on it since then I have added another 50k miles. It feels as strong as the first day as I got it. It is my daily drive and it is combination of highway and local roads.

Just like you, I was hoping to have that clutch replaced under the extended warranty program. No such luck!

I think in most cases clutch fail can cause DMF or rear crankshaft seal leak.
