Ordering a new car

Do I negotiate price at the time of the order or after the car arrives?

At time of order and you should get it in writing on Dealer letterhead and signed by the Sales Mgr. You don't want be held hostage when the car arrives and you can't agree to a price then you might have to re-order from another dealer and wait another 2 months.

Another question - if I get it in writing - can I walk away from the it if I change my mind or go with another dealer? Do I lose my deposit or do I get to keep it?

The dealer can not hold you to the order (at least not in my state), but more than likely you will lose your deposit.

You can walk at anytime as to the deposit, it really varies by state. In California, it's fully refundable by law.

You'll need to check the laws in your state and ask the dealer. Any legitimate good dealer will tell you upfront whether or not deposit is refundable.
