Actually, just checked the F10 M5 and its 232g/km so the M3 with a straight 6 is bound to be a bit lower than that. Especially with this auto-stop-start they insist on nowadays.

Never understood why people worry about 200 extra a year road tax a year on cars such as these, it's probably the least significant cost in the cars ownership but there you go.

Not apples and apples. Tune the new M3 ~550HP? which would beat a tuned 335i - and so it goes on...

I agree, but I think it matters more from a company car point of view as CO2 affects your BIK.

Though you can tune a 135/335 to similar power levels its not really fair comparing a highly tune (potentially less reliable?) car to a stock car, but I just cannot get excited by the new M3/M4.

Have to say the new Alpina B3 is more tempting, virtually the same power output but no doubt the M3 will be a fair bit more expensive to buy and run. Still am sure BMW will sell lots....but for me I'll wait for the next version, providing the N54 unit in my car keeps going for another 6-7 years

This car will be brilliant and will sell very well, just as it's predecessors were and did.
Exactly... It could be worse. The new Audi RS6 is 20bhp down on the out going model but I'm sure the new model is a better car as complete package.

The new M3/4 will be better in everyday I'm sure...

The peak may not be as high as some would like but the power band certainly looks wider. You don't spend all your time at the peak anyway.

Everyone always looks at the BHP and makes quick judgements. New M3/M4 will be better in every possible way and far better then a tuned 335i. In-fact, I have an e93 M3 and had an e93 335i and although the 335i felt faster, there is no comparison. The M series are more then just the amount of HP...everything is far better from performance to handling to sounds etc etc..

As for the new M3/M4 being 'just' 430bhp...yes figure may sound disappointing to those who where expecting 450+ but with weight reduction, turbo and all the newer technology going into these cars, it will by far be an improvement over a tuned 335i / current e9x M3. Just looking at all the vids you can tell just how well the M3/M4 is planted to the track. Will be very much looking to get one!

Putting this in perspective

Let's put this new M3/M4 into some kind of perspective:

Compare the performance of your 335i or E92 M3 with just the driver vs. driver plus 3 adults. In performance terms, the 80kg weight reduction and 16BHP power increase is the equivalent of removing 3 adults (204kgs) from a current M3 or 335i!

An e46 CSL was some 110kg lighter than the standard model with 20 bhp more....the new M3 provides some 75% of that and the CSL was and still is a performance icon. Add 25% more torque and that 75% increases to 100%. So expect the F30 M3/4 to do to the e9x what the CSL did for the e46, but without the hair shirt.

Imagine the torque of a 330d, but in a car that revs to 7,500rpm, develops 75% more power and weighs 120kg less!
An extra 100nm of torque available from below 2000 rpm will completely transform the car. A touch of the gas pedal at almost any revs, in any gear will unleash the monster. And with special engineering to keep turbos spinning off throttle, instant response is going to become the new hallmark for M Turbo engines.

The e92 was launched to rave reviews and continued to garner accolades for its entire lifetime. Judging by the specs, this latest iteration is likely to do the same.

Oh, and the 25% better fuel consumption is going to translate to better CO2 figures, which will now fit many company car policies, which prohibit cars that omit high levels of CO2

I also just read about this "special technology" to keep the turbo's spinning too. Are their any more details on this? It sounds like some kind of mild anti-lag (ALS) system but I was under the impression that running ALS on a road car wasn't a great idea as it mullers the turbo's life expectancy. Sounds exciting if they got this cracked as that is one of off boost throttle response is one of the main things people complain about in a turbo car. Just wondering what technology they've used to keep the turbo spinning without effecting it's longevity?

Fine! Fine!, we all know it's going to be an "improvement" over the current e92 M3. And no sure why some start comparing it with a tuned 335i!...

And of course, M cars have always been about handling...

However, it would be very very interesting how it performs against other sports coupes... lap/ track times and 1/4 mile, 0- 60 times etc...

Traditionally M cars aren't always the quickest for acceleration times as they are usually at a power deficit compared to their rivals, however when it comes to lap\track times they always seem to be able to go round faster despite the power disadvantage, make of that what you will.

And in all honesty, is BMW going to release a new version of their seminal sports car and make it worse than the outgoing one? No.

Im looking forward to driving this M3 sounds like they put alot of "schtuff" in this one but it does look like there is alot of plastic too. Time will tell.
