Debating having this done by you soon, just not looking forward to having to drive out to Worcester .

I've been having kind of jerky acceleration at times and the car just doesn't seem as smooth, even with my new turbos. No codes being thrown. Does this sound like it might be due to carbon buildup?

How many miles? If you have anywhere near 45-50k miles you will definitely benefit from a good blasting

70k, it's long overdue. I know the car will pull and breathe better with the walnut blasting, but the jerky acceleration has me worried. I'm just thinking that if the jerky acceleration is a sign of something else, I need to take care of that first.

Well the walnut blasting will certainly help with the inconsistent throttle and it's definitely needed at your mileage so even if it doesn't resolve your problem it will get you one step closer to the root.

Based on what I've seen, it shouldn't be necessary at that mileage for the N55.


RsPhi, do you guys do before and after photos for every car that comes in or let people step into the shop to take a look? Not that I don't trust you, I'd just like to have a look to see just how bad it is and for the peace of mind I'd get seeing them looking shiny and new again.

For customers waiting while the service is being done I usually ask them if they want to see how they look before and after. For those who drop off the car, I take a few pictures to show them when they come back.

Cleaning out the carbon helps with a smooth acceleration, those who have really dirty valves usually experience a slow/hesitation acceleration. As what Tiago said, you will still benefit having the carbon cleaning done, but the jerkiness could be something else.
You could try take out the Vanos solenoids and cleaning those to see if it helps.

As for the N55s at 52k the valves don't get as dirty the filthy N54s. Some people do it jsut for the peace of mind, but you probably wont feel a difference compared to the N54.

Good stuff, thanks for the info. Glad to hear you let people in the garage to take a look at the valves. VANOS solenoids were replaced less than 5,000 miles ago, so I doubt they're an issue.

I'll have to come in and have the cleaning done. If that doesn't do it, I'll try resetting adaptations and then I'll have to figure out a way to get access to a power supply so I can do a DME update and flash my TCU while I'm at it.

I'll shoot you a PM sometime soon to schedule an appointment once I can actually clear off a free Saturday on my calendar.

If anyone's debating having this done: go do it! Phi's a good guy and worked hard on my exceptionally nasty intake valves to get them clean. The car was noticeably smoother after! Plus there's the peace of mind knowing that it's clean.

I believe that the M57 is a completely different procedure that I am not familiar with. IIRC i believe the head needs to be take off to be complete cleaned, the intake manifold runners, EGR, and some flap thing (correct me if I'm wrong).

Just got my valve cleaning done today at Chandler Auto Body (335i w/ 46k mi). Very friendly service. Phi was great. Scheduled me in quickly and drop off/pick up was easy. Much better price than my indy shop. The smoother idle was immediately obvious.

Highly recommend it for those in the area!

The N52s aren't prone to the carbon build you see on the direct injected N54/N55s.
