330i n53 engine can it run a turbo?
so just a quick question a friend of my is running a turbo in his e46 330i with standard internals and it got me thinking would I get away with it on my n53 engine with low boost pressure, can it handle the compression as it is the base for the n54 engine?

a million times cheaper to buy a 335 or swap in an n54 if buying a 335 is cost prohibitive in the UK. Your tuning potential with an n54 will be far better than a custom turbo for a 330 motor.

As long as you have money, anything is possible

Isn't the block made out of lighter / weaker metal in the 330? You would be better off digging your self a hole in the yard and go throw 10k in it and call it a day. At least that way your car will still have resale value and your only out the 10k. Turning a non turbo car into a turbo car is a big and expensive job especially to do it right. Doesn't make sense to do when you can just buy the 335 and be done with it.

it would never cost me anywhere near 10k for that money I could fit an m3 v8 and twin turbo it. I can do this for less than 1500 as I done it on a friends car before, I just need to know can the pistons take the compression? if fitting an n54 was cheaper then I would do it, remember doing that you need a lot more than just the engine. I already have a t4 and t23 turbo so if I can use the same block and internals all I have to do is fab some parts, intercooler and remap.

I guess that it can take a turbo, playing in the design safety margins, but the real question IMO is how much boost? 12psi? 18? 20? I would check with what was done at tuners. |

No! and don't go out and buy a 335 either, just jump to the M3, M5, or M6 enjoy it for a while, then start modifying...

my insurance is too expensive on anything like that hence whey I havnt got one.
saintor I can get a full turbo kit for £900. Im not the sort of person to pay full wack for everything and get mugged off. I would be able to do this for a very good price. I done a twin turbo on my 350z, forged pistons etc and I done it all for less than £2400 with all new parts. Just need to hunt around and get your hands dirty. Your correct the max boost is what I need to know. I converted my 325 to 330 for £500 when other companies charge £1300. |
