Navigation: DVD read error - Intermittent

Folks!

I'm getting a DVD read error on my current Navigation. It's intermittent, sometime it works sometimes doesn't. Does that mean the DVD is bad? At first it happened about 40% of the time. Now its more 90% range.

I tried burning a copy of my current DVD it worked but the same thing. DVD read error. I am not sure if its a bad DVD or my navigation system itself.

Please point me in the right direction.

If you're using a burned DVD, it's probably the DVD itself. Use a high quality media like Verbatim AZO DVD-R media and that'll help a lot.

I'm currently having the exact same issue. Please update if you've fixed the problem.

NAV drive might be having problems reading disc. It's a fairly common problem with early CCC drives. Try inserting disc in upper drive. If disc works in upper drive. Your NAV drive is bad. I replaced mine with a new drive which fixed my issue.

We had the DVD replaced under warranty to fix a reading problem.

dvd scratched

Also check the surface of your disk. If it's scratched, it can cause the read error. I can only imagine that copying a scratched DVD will cause copy errors which would then cause the same read errors on the new DVD...

Do you recommend +R or -R media? Verbatim AZO comes in both formats.

Just wondering if it made a difference... Thanks

Can we get an update if that type of media corrected the issue? I am experiencing this issue and believe it's the DVD system that is going bad on a 2007.

Thanks

I get the same error usually when it's really hot outside. it only happens once in a while, but every time i take out the nav DVD, it's burning hot. However, most of the time, it works fine.

I've found that using DVD+R solved my issue in intermittent DVD read errors. I tried using DVD-R on both my 335 and fiance's 328 with new maps and it would error out after a while but since switching to DVD+R, both cars have been happy with the burned discs...and it's been over a month now with no issues

Sorry to threadjack, but I'm having similar problems and instead of creating a new thread, I figured I'd post here. It's gotten worse over the past months, but my navigation won't read my NAV DVD. It's an OEM DVD from BMW (not burnt) so I don't think it's the disc. However, I keep the disc in my NAV drive at all times. I have an 08 335 with CCC if that matters. Anyways, randomly I'll be driving and the "menu" to the side will change to the car stats view (I normally keep it on perspective view) and it won't allow me to change it back. It acts like there isn't a disc in the drive when there actually is. I don't get any actual read errors, but it just acts like there's no disc inserted. I've tried removing the disc and reloading it, which used to work a few months ago when this problem wasn't as persistent, but now that it's happening more often, the reloading the disc doesn't seem to work as often. Sometimes I'll be driving for a while and it won't read the disc, so I'll remove it and attempt to reload it, and the disc itself will be very hot to the touch. There's no funny noises coming from the drive. It just acts like the drive doesn't want to read the disc anymore. It's very annoying. It will actually WORK maybe 20-25% of the time. Is the drive going bad? Is there a way to test this? Simple fix other than replacing the drive? I can try to provide pics if needed. Anyone have any ideas?

I think a new DVD drive is around $150 after core credit/refund.

Bummer, mine is a 2007 and this just started earlier this year. I wonder how easy it is to DIY and where to buy the part. Not sure if it's worth it since my phone has taken over the navigation duties

Navigation DVD drive is less than $100 at GetBMWparts.com/Tischer. Part for my car was 65839241764. Check your part number on RealOEM.com

It's not uncommon for the CCC unit DVD drive to fail. A replacement drive can be found on eBay for around $100.

FYI, some burnable DVDs are couple mm thicker than production DVDs. This increase in thickness can cause excessive heat.

Also some tips/notes...

CCC units are sensitive to voltage. They boot when the user activated circuit in the car is triggered...ie opening doors, unlocking car, etc

When you start the car, cranking the motor will cause a drop in voltage as the current demand from the starter motor increases. This drop in voltage will cause the CCC unit to freeze. If you have a weak battery, you may notice the iDrive unit freezing then all of sudden, it reboots and is fine.

To manually soft reset the CCC units, hold in both eject buttons and the volume knob until the BMW logo appears. If the DVD still does not read, try removing the DVD and reinserting it.

Hi all,

I started getting the common error of navigation not being able to read the disk. After checking out multiple forums, I thought it was the dvd player failure. Then I started looking for a new dvd player and found one. I was just about to order it ($150 + $200 for the core) but I saw a post mentioning that it might be due to the dvd disk itself.

The disk I am using isn't original one but it had been working fine for the last 5 years without any issues until a few months ago. Just to make sure it is the disk not the dvd player, I replaced the current one with the original one. Magic!!!! It started working again. I noticed that the original one is thinner than the burned dvd disk.

So those who consider replacing the unit should try the original disk. If problem persists then you may no choice but replace it.
