Self-driving cars

It looks like self-driving cars will be readily available in my life-time and I can't wait. The prospect of an autonomous car dropping me off at the door or collecting me from the pub will be like living in the proper-future. Roads will be safer, you won't need to mess about looking for parking and your kids can run themselves to all their after school nonsense.

Many households could go from 2 practical cars to 1 self-driver and a weekend car.

However, most people I talk to reckon they wouldn't dare get in a self-driving car and that somehow it would be less safe than a human driver.

What do people on here think? (apart from taxi-drivers )

As long as they don't programme them all to drive like old people then it will be fine.

Isn't that just a taxi?

Next somebody will come up with the idea of installing metal bars in the road and joining lots of vehicles together to cover long distances at speed.

I guess it could be good for alcoholics but you could just get a taxi.

For me personally, I hate his prospect. I love driving, why would i want the car to drive me? I can imagine how annoying and uncomfortable it would be to sit in a car and have no control.

I can also imagine the Government one day trying to ban driving a normal car, and say how great the new auto ones are as they save lives etc. I'm sure this day will come, just hoping it's not in my lifetime.

Agreed. At some point a teenager will be saying "What? People were allowed to drive cars themselves? Weren't loads of them incompetent and didn't hundreds of people get killed?" and the reply will be "Yes. We just put up with it."

Shouldn't happen in my life time because if they were only as safe as human drivers there is no way they would be allowed. The debate on banning normal cars will take decades.
