dvla bad experience

sold my Harley in july. sent the reg document off day after the sale. (you are stupid not to for obvious reasons) 2 months later the person who bought the bike called to say she hadn't received a new reg doc. I assured her id sent it off so she said she would pursue dvla, anyway she calls to say all ok has the reg doc. today I get a letter from dvla weve been told you have sold this vehicle but not informed us, have a fine of 56!! has anyone had a similar experience. I know they did a similar thing to a friend over a sorn on a vehicle, he told them where to stick their sorn and never heard anymore.

I've had no less than 3 incidents with the DVLA on separate cars over the last year. They are worse than useless.

In the last 12 months
1. didn't refund the tax on a car I sorn'd.
2. Continually have the wrong car recorded against my wifes registration (have had it recorded as 3 different cars this year alone).
3. Sent me the V5 for a car I have never owned.

I dread dealing with them

As above the DVLA are usless. It is too easy for them to claim they diddn't receive it when they probably made a paper aeroplane and threw it across the office as they were bored of shredding the rest of the mail. They are almost as bad as BT!!!

I would also bet that the plane flew very badly due to shoddy workmanship in the construction!

Can't believe you would send a document that can leave you to such potential liability without using recorded deilvery for about an extra 80p.

Stupid question but can you send things to them record since you just write DVLA, Swansea on an envelope. I'm always amazed anything reaches that address.

When I got the Zed (April 11) I took all the forms to DVLA Manchester to put my private plate on it & purchased a tax disc over the counter. About 6 months later I realised I'd not received the V5 so called DVLA. They claimed they knew nothing about it even though I'd hand-delivered it to their office and had the tax disc they sold me over the counter!! The only complication was it was brought over from N.Ireland so needed re-registering in the mainland. Got sorted out without too much hassle though so wasn't the end of the world (stupidly I had to prove I had the car - provide photos of it & confirm the VIN number, etc).

Xenon, recorded delivery doesn't save you. With DVLA, it only counts as received by them when they log it into their system.

They are a bureaucratic gestapo.

It proves you mailed it though and on that basis you could dispute any non-notification fine as you had done everthying you were asked to do. There's not a magistrate in the land who would find against you if you had documented evidence of posting.

these days you have to be bonkers not to send the reg doc in as you could end up with a pile of speeding/parking fines and no licence, that's why I make sure isend it off immediately. its not always convenient where I live due to an excess of double yellow lines (there are a number of over zealous parking gestapo) to go to the PO to record a letter.

+1 I send everything offical by SD or "Signed For" (Actually sir, there's no such thing as 'recorded delivery' anymore, which PO staff delight in telling you). It's only 1.70 "signed for" 1st class with a 50 value insured. SD has just gone up to 6.50 for a letter!

There's always a post office somewhere you can pop in, they seem to be in Coops and other shops these days, open till late.

Just spotted, Special Delivery now includes "consequential loss cover for tax returns or documents, that if late could results in fines or penalties" Might be worth 6.50 if you're cutting it fine.

Well there is:

what's the difference? Signed For / Recorded, same thing. Even their own delivery sticker says so....

I agree, I've just lost count of the times that (un)helpful PO staff have told me (when I ask for recorded delivery), that

"we don't do recorded delivery any more sir, you can have 'Signed For' or Special Delivery"

Now I always ask for recorded just to hear them repeat themselves.

<Monty Pythons 4 Yorshiremen voice> Right!. I went into a Post Office in Liverpool with a parcel I had packed into an old photocopier-paper box. The cardigan behind the counter refused to accept it because it had "DataCopy" printed on the box and they were "only allowed to accept plain parcels". Rather than go home I bought a flat-pack box from a display in the post-office. The box had "Royal Mail" printed all over it like a pattern. I put my parcel in the new box and took it to the counter. They declared that the box that they had just sold me wasn't suitable either and they couldn't accept it.

You tell the young people of today that and they won't believe you.

Send a message via Skype™ to Sir_Pigley
The Registration Document has printed on it that when you sell the car you are responsible for sending the V5 back and that you should receive an acknowledgement letter back within 4 weeks to say you are no longer liable for the vehicle.

In BOLD type it also says "If you do not get an acknowledgement letter from us phone DVLA Customer Enquiries on 0300 790 6802, as you could be liable for the vehicle and may get a penalty and/or be prosecuted."

So the OP is theoretically at fault because he did not tell the DVLA that he had not received the acknowledgement letter.

I didn't know this and almost came unstuck myself a little while ago. It seems a little unfair since you send the paperwork back with this informaiton on it when you return the V5 to the DVLA.
