Question Pump Noise from Left Rear

I searched for this first but found no results. Perhaps this is me just now noticing the sound however I doubt it. Since the weather has cooled off (below 65*F) I've been noticing a pump sound when I shut the car off. It seems to be coming from the LR near the DEF fill port, but it is definitely at the rear. It starts as soon as I shut the car off, it spools up, and its not loud but its a noticeable pump sound and runs for 1-2 minutes then shuts off. What is this that I'm hearing? I've owned the car since May and have yet to hear this. I'm assuming its a transfer pump of sorts for the DEF tank. I did notice that when it was near 40*F the other night it was more pronounced than this evening when its about 65*F.

IIRC the DEF in the line gets transferred back to the active tank. Perhaps it's that.

I have wondered about this as well. It drives me crazy. I'm going to mention it to the dealer when I take it in tomorrow. The noise seems a bit too loud.

I wonder if mine is as loud as yours. Does someone mind posting a video or audio clip of theirs?

The DEF pump reversing flow to draw unused fluid back into the tank makes sense.

I will see what I can do about the video.

I guess I am just now noticing it as the weather is cooling off, stuff gets louder in the cold as there air density increases and there's less humidity.

I took a video on my pump noise.

Video here:

I took the car into the dealer yesterday and I played the videofor him. He was surprised how loud it was as well.

Is this what other people are hearing as well.

Note that the video is taken by my phone below the rear bumper directly below where the spare tire would go if the 335d had one instead of a urea tank. Note that the phone was located on the garage floor directly below the pump- so the noise sounds louder than if you were standing at the rear of the car.

based on the loudness of your breathing afterward I would say it seems about the normal volume to me, pretty tough to tell how loud something is in a video like that though. It did sound a bit different than normal to me, more high pitched, but thats a portion of sound that would be more easily filtered by the bumper and the ground so Im not sure its a good comparison unless I listened under the bumper like that

Funny you mention this and apperently is the fuel pump ... this happened to me for the first time ever in almost 8 yrs. It happened only once. I have not heard this again...

I wonder is this is a sign of pump going bad?

Good point. But to be fair, the pump had cut off completely before I took a breath, so the AGC on the video recorder may have been super-sensitive.

Clearly a video during the day outside of the car would be best. This is the only video I have and wanted to get *something* up.

It is loud enough to notice. Also, it seems to get louder when it is colder outside.

This may be normal operation, just trying to see if other people have the same noise.

So the dealer replaced the urea transfer pump. They thought it was loud too. I'll take another video and let everyone know if it fixed the problem or not.

Crossing fingers for this and the latest transmission software update.

That's the sound I'm hearing in the video posted above.

Its not a fuel pump sound which is at a higher pitch and less mechanical sounding. The fuel pump is more of a "weeeee" sound.

Thanks everyone, of something happens with the car I'll let you all know, as of now everything is good.

The dealer didn't have to drop the urea tank to replace the motor. I asked specifically because of PR 335d's post he mentions above.

I'll post a new video.

Probably just a NSA GPS tracking device going into sleep mode. Nothing to worry about.
