07 335xi whirring sound from underneath car..hear in cabin. help guys

whats going on all? My car recently developed this whirring sound in the cabin. Sound goes up and down when accelerating or decelerating. You all should be able to hear it in the posted YouTube video.

any thoughts? Differential? tCase?

Thanks a lot!

SITUATION HAS BEEN RESOLVED!

Front differential was on it's way out hence the whining/whirring noise. Dealership quoted about 4000 for repair. I went through BMW NA to get a good will repair. THey ended up doing it. They covered the part and I cover the labor at warranty shop rates... So all and all I'll be out $700 bucks.

Had a similar sound, it ended up being the front diff, but it could be the transfer case. Might find somewhere to put it up on a lift and they can run it through a few gears while listening to it.

Thanks Mykal. I appreciate it. Did you end up replacing your front diff? What was the cost? I plan to have it diagnosed this weekend somewhere or another.

Definitely a possibility. My WRX sounded just like that when the center diff was on the way out.

thanks for all the responses i've not had it checked yet because of work. So haven't been driving it at all. I'm wondering if it is the pinion bearing going out. The sound goes away when the motor is off and i am coasting downhill. Anyone heard of any cost associated with replacing diff, bearing, or tcase?

I plan to have it diagnosed this week at a BMW dealership somewhere in the DMV area. I've heard its like 150 or so for that. Times like this i wish I still had warranty. Expired bout 3 months ago.

You put it into neutral and let it coast? That doesn't sound like a wheel bearing. Wheel bearing sound won't usually start till atleast a few mph but yours sounds like it happens right as you start hitting the gas.

Yeah, I think it's the bearing that deals with the differential. Surprising.

I looked, but didn't see on the post: how many miles on the car?

so turns out to be center differential is dead... $4000 repair. BMW is quoting $1830 for the differential and the remainder is labor.

another update: spoke with a few shops and they say that this is the first time they've heard of a front differential going out on a car with so few miles... my car has about 64.8k. They told me to contact BMW NA for some type of good will repair because of the rarity of this situation. No such luck there.. I'm going to source the part and have it put in by an indy shop... They have to disconnect subframe and all kind of stuff to get to it... makes me half way want to throw in some downpipes while it's taken apart... now if i could find a decent set of catted downpipes so i can pass emissions.

sigh.

Any update on this, OP? Sorry to hear about this.

couple questions: did your other indy shops check on it as well? Was the car running poorly or was it just the noise?

Have you had it fixed and if so what did you end up paying to get it done? I've read differentials are hard to find for the xi 'used'. $4K is insane to me.

I'm experiencing a similar sound but will be changing all diff/trans/t-case fluids/filters etc asap.

praying I don't have to deal with replacing a differential or t-case... or worse...a tranny.

good afternoon all, & I hope that you're ready for a great Thanksgiving! I've checked on prices for my car, and it actually bought a differential from BMW of South Atlanta for 1300 dollars. This is about 500 to 600 dollars cheaper than what the dealership was offering here in Washington DC. I've talked with you in the shops and they said that they can do the work for about $800. So this is going to be about a 2000 dollar savings. I've also look for used differentials but could not find any because 335 XI have a very specific unit.I've been told by multiple dealerships that at 65 thousand miles like my car has that there should not be a differential failure. I have done some drag strip runs but not as many as some others. But it's surprising that the differential goes out.please excuse any typos or grammar errors I'm doing the voice to text function on my car

I had the front diff on my E46 330xi go out at around 120K or so (threw a tooth and froze the drivetrain.) IIRC, it was like a $3K repair parts+labor, so you're doing good. At that time (2006? - my car was a 2001), that was only the 2nd that the shop or the forums had heard of - extremely rare.

Couple things to consider:
1) The silly front diff contains less than a pint of lube. I would change it every 30K miles (although that didn't help me!)
2) Replace all the front CVJ rubber bellows coverings - they're going to all be off and they're the weak points of the front axle.

That is great news (Sorta)!! Hard to celebrate over a $2k repair bill but when you get there from the original # you were given it seems like a steal!

Sorry this happened.

Curious....what other signs did the car display outside of the whirling noise? I have it and I am preparing myself for the worst but hoping I'm just fixated on a normal sound.

Did the car drive funny? Any mechanical malfunction or just the sound? I agree...the sound can drive me insane so I get it.
