Range Rover Sport

Is this a worthy competitor to the X5? New aluminum frame saves it 800 lbs. S/C V6 makes 340hp. With similar equipment it is evenly priced with the X5.

it is a nice car, but I think the options list can push this car to 80k range.
the x5 is a great car if you ask me. This would be tough decision. If I wanted something that was more proven, then I would take the x5.

I'd take the new RRS over any X5 in a heart beat.

I'm actually a fan of the FX50 (now QX70) at that price range. You get a little bit more power and probably a bit more reliability compared to both the range rover and the X5. Granted, the QX70 isn't exactly in the same class (it's probably more comparable to the X3) but it's something to consider.

For exactly the same price as the range rover you get a 5.0L V8 with 390 HP/369 ft-lb torque AND the QX70 is actually an additional ~200 pounds lighter than the Range Rover.

Although looking up prices now it seems like the X5 has options above and below the QX70 that are appropriately priced (although it weighs a hell of a lot more so that's still something to consider).

Got a 2012 Sport HSE for my girlfriend. It's great for her around town, and it's been surprisingly reliable (not the norm). Didn't care to cross-shop anything because we weren't "in the market for "an SUV," we were in the market for a Range Rover...so obviously chose it over an X5.

Not a huge fan of the styling on the new one, however. It looks great, but now it just looks like a smaller version of the full-size, where as before there was some distinction. When the lease is up we'll get the Range Rover Supercharged.

The previous gen RR Sport was much more LR4 than Range Rover. This new one is a drastic improvement in almost every way, although styling is obviously personal opinion.

If you want an RRS right now, prepare to pay a $5-$10k markup. They came out like a month ago and theres not enough supply for the demand.

They way they are optioned from factory, MSRP's for the new RRS are 85-90k+ (not including the $5-10k markups for them)

If you get an RRS Autobiography, it MSRP's for well over $100k.

Is it worthy? I would take a new Range Rover Sport all day over an X5.

I would say it is too early to judge reliability.

Got it for her Valentines Day 2012. 20 months and 15K miles of almost 90% city mileage and it's been fine. Higher end cars come with the expectation of lower reliability...it's only been to the dealer twice. Once it was for stalling out at aggressive throttle input from low speed due to a fueling issue, and another time because the nav/radio stooped working. Otherwise, it's been good. Most RRs are absolute nightmares, but so long as you're not ignorant to that before purchase, most will be happy.

We have both - a new RR SE and a X5 35i Msport. The X5 drives WAY better - the RR sport's power delivery is not very smooth. fit and finish goes to the RR.

Actually, when I spend more $ on a vehicle, my expectation is higher. The problem is IMO, most high end vehicles are European and there lies the potential problem with reliability. No question maintenance is more expensive for European vehicles, which should not be tied to reliability.

yeah so true. one guy on another forum bought the new RR big monty, drove it for 5k miles and sold it for 8k higher than he paid. oh wow! I did not know they are in such high demand. I have driven few of them. They are nice, but for that much money I have put my bet on Cayenne every time.

I just purchased an SUV for my wife, I did look at both the 14 RRS and the 14 x5 50i M sport. My wife couldn't get over the similarities the RRS has to the new ford explorer, We ended up with the 14 X5

Since BMW has completely ruined the X5, it is hideous. I wouldn't even consider it as an option.

RRS all day over the X5. But really I would take a Cayenne in this segment.

the x5 is nice, but its not the same calibre as the Range

its like comparing a 911 to an m3 imo

What engine? The 5.0 is a smooth engine. The V6 though, reminds me of old Buick V6's. What's weird is that the same powertrain in Jaguar feels better.

The SE is the base 3.0 V6 supercharged. Never driven the 5.0 supercharged.

the new RRS with the 5.0 supercharged is a beast. never thought an suv could feel that fast. and it sounds like an f-type jag. exhaust pops and gurgles

Have a friend with a new RRS, only trouble since day one. They are not reliable. Now he regrets the X5.
I personally don't like the design but that is another story. In fact I like more the previous X5 too, so...
