What would you choose Z4m Coupe or Cayman S

let say Cayman cost $3-4k more,
2008 z4m coupe vs 2006 cayman s
DD & Track both purposes,
same mileage, MT

which one would you go with?

My friend has cayman S, and he wants to trade
I am considering it but couple things are holding me back.
maintenance on this porsche is a no joke, and I would like to keep my z4m coupe because its rare.

I think your two reasons for holding you back are good ones imo.

I drove a Cayman S this past weekend with a Manual. It was a brand new one. I've never driven the Z4M, but I've driven the S54 engine a couple of times with manuals. If it were me I'd stick with the Z4M. The Cayman was a very good car, but I don't think I'd end up by buying one, really wasn't what I was expecting.

Maintenance on Cayman is the same as on any other car. You have to be a fool or have lots of money to bring it to dealer for regular maintenance. Oil, plugs, tranny, coolant, other fluids....I dont see it costing much more then my Honda.

After reading many blown engine stories with Cayman (plus other less serious issues), I would probably stick with Z4M

Unless it's a 911, I would stick with the M.

I wanted 1Gen CS or Z4M, picked CS for my next car.....and after many many sleepless nights I decided to keep my S2k.

Caymans I was looking at were very low miles, but no warranty. This would be my 1st German car without one....I got scared and backed out till I can afford 2009+ or CPO. I think M97 engine is just a piss poor design/quality by Porsche.

PS. price difference between my car and newer and much lower miles CS was pretty small.......wasnt really about money here.

i love caymans... old and new. s and non-s.

but that said, if i already had a Z4M, no way would i trade for a car that's 2yrs older. if they were both the same model year or both new, and i didnt already have either of the cars, i'd pick the cayman s.

Cayman S is a poor man's Porsche. Plus the resale value of Porsche's is shit. Now add that to the fact that the Cayman S is one of their cheaper models, pass on it. He obviously wants the Z4m for a reason. Keep your bimmer, its a lot better than the Porsche and worth alot more used in the same condition. Keep the BIMMER!!!!!

Cayman is a better handling car than 911. It is among the best handling cars in the world apparently....plus its a Porsche. Trade.

Wow you don't know much about Porsche. Z4M wont be able to keep up on the track.

Given the two choices, hands down, I'd pick a Porsche over a BMW -- but my personal choice would be another model Porsche and no newer than 1998 - I love the air cooled noise.

Then I think you've answered your own question.

(Equipped with drivers with identical skills, the Cayman should be faster.)

I've driven both cars, and the Cayman definitely is the better handling car. If you're not pushing the car to its limits on a regular basis then both are great choices, and the torque of the Bimmer is nice to have on the street. X factor would be the fact that a 2006 Cayman S has a fragile engine.

What on earth are you talking about? People say the same thing about the Boxster yet I believe those are the same people who blindly listen to or follow what many automotive journalists like to say regarding the fact that the 911 is the only Porsche you only ever need to know about or aspire to own. Some of my friends are among those who would call the Boxster/Cayman the "poor man's porsche" and I think it's a very narrow-minded point of view.

Porsche does not make bad products. The 911 is certainly a car to aspire for, but the Boxster and Cayman hold up in their own classes.

Look at the facts. For the price, the Boxster and Cayman perform very well. Let's not discount the fact that both are mid-engined RWD cars so they offer arguably better balance than the 911. Porsche has just been stubborn over the years, and I think rightly so, in sticking with the RR setup on the 911 and tweaking it. It keeps the character of the car alive.

The Boxster and Cayman are built to a certain price point just as the 328i or 335i are compared to the M3 and they're all very competitive at those price points.

I do however, agree that the OP's friend probably wants the Z4M for a reason. I'd question their motive. As someone else mentioned, I also wouldn't go for the Porsche because it's 2 years older. The Z4M is a very respectable vehicle. You'd really be splitting hairs looking at the differences between the two for daily driving.

Take my opinion with a grain of salt though, I don't have much experience with the Z4M or the Cayman. I do know that if I had to pick between equivalent model years, I'd go with the Cayman S.

I heard early caymans have a shit load of problems.

I'd still rather have a Porsche than a z4, though.

Edit: I didn't realize you already had the z4m. I would keep it in that case.

I went through the same thing in 2010 and ended up buying Cayman S with PASM and 19" sport wheels. To me, Cayman is a well balanced car and the power is plenty.. It is a very practical car and you can fit more stuff than anyone can believe. I drove the car straight for 16 hours and I didn't have any issues. For track purpose, the early cayman S 06 -08 has oil starvation issues under high g forces. If you like the rarity, I would go with Z4m coupe, otherwise with the cayman.. Maintenance is the same with both cars.. Take it to a indy..

Cayman S hands down, Z4M is rare yes, but the cayman is inherently better handling and is more fun to drive (not that a Z4M isn't)

+ 1 Porsche. Better handling. More storage (if you plan on a road trip that requires luggage). Maintenance is likely close to the same.

Interesting. Cause you can price out a new Cayman S to be more than a base 911...

But to the OP, in this situation I would stay with the Z4M

Lmao I don't see one true statement in all of this BS you wrote.

On the other hand I test drove a Cayman S a while back and that mid-engine feel and sound is just second to none. That car is amazing! I would definitely go for the Cayman.
