Question Poor fuel consumption despite changing stats

Hi guys...my E90 320D used to do 40 MPG combined and recently the MPG got dropped to 28MPG. Upon checking the threads on this forum I have had both the EGR and Main stats changed now and also the coolent! I can see the temp going up to 89C to 91C, unfortunately my fuel consumption is still bad, I am only getting 32 MPG combined. Any ideas what else could be wrong?

Incorrect i.e. low tyre pressures are another major influence on fuel consumption.

Sticking calipars/brakes check to see uneven brake pad wear?

Any black smoke? Vac leak causing more fuel to be burnt. Has there been a change in performance?

Hi All,

Thanks for all the responses. Just to confirm there is no black smoke or reduction in performance or any funny noises, the car pulls very well specially in 3rd and 4th when turbo kicks in!!

Regarding poor dirty air filter and oil, I have had an oil change in the last 4 months so less likely, cant remember if I had the air filter replaced or not, I will need to check my service history book later and confirm.

My brakes I can see they are a bit flaky sometimes….

Could a poor air filter and poor brake pads be the cause then?

The biggest influence in MPG figures is the driver and how its being driven.

I used to see low/mid 40's from my re-mapped 320d if driven with MPG in mind, this would drop to low 30's if it was ripped.

How many miles are you getting out of a brimmed tank of diesel?

Hi, may be you are right, I used to get 40 MPG when I was driving a bit slow, these days I drive a bit fast and rev the car a bit

In the past on a brimmed tank I used to get between 500 to 550 and now I get 420

Checked my car service book and in September 2013 I had both engine oil and micro filter changed....so ours hard to guess now..

Is it worth getting a full diagnostic check at the local bmw dealer? Topto see what is causing this??

I don't own a D, but others will correct you. Does Diesel have oil filters??

If all maintenance are up to date, try driving how you used to drive to see.

As seen in the service slip, there is diesel fuel filter which hasn't been changed for a while, so first I will get that changed and then drive the way I used to drive in the past see if it makes any difference

given how BMW carry out services, the chances are that your fuel filter is original, probably your air filter too given the recent thread.... so yes i would arrange to have them replaced. and actually make sure it gets done.

how many miles has your car done?

after the filters are changed you could also run a bottle of injector cleaner through, or just use a couple of tanks of Vpower Diesel.

hello Icecube, thank you. My car is done 106,000 miles

Yes I will change both the filters as it sounds like a sensible thing to do.

I have never used an injector cleaner so I will use a couple of tanks of Shell V power diesel instead...and also drive a bit slow..hope all these should make things better...

fingers crossed

Air filter and Diesel fuel filter replacement are normally required every 3rd oil service (according to the schedule in my service book)

For some reason although I got all my services done at regular intervals, it got missed and hence the need to change them now...
