Check engine light came on after running on empty for a while

Hey, I let my car run on empty till about 40kms (dumb, I know, I was trying to find a shell to fill up at). After filling it up after driving for a bit the check engine light came on. The car runs fine, nothing sounds different either. Any recommendations?

Would there be any symptoms if the fuel pump is failing?

The car starts and runs fine, I'm doubtful that it's the fuel pump. Do you know where can have a code reader done in Canada?

Bring the car to a BMW dealer, a certified BMW third party auto shop, or buy a diagnostic reader at a car parts store (i.e., Autozone, O'Riely's) and check the service code.

You want to avoid running on empty because the gas in the tank actually cools the fuel pump. That's the reason for the dire warning in the BMW User Manual.

Go to autozone and get codes. Easiest way to know if its fuel related. Service engine means emission related like o2 sensor maf ignition coils spark plug fuel pump etc.

Not racist.
Talking about the owner running on empty.
It would be nationalist not racist anyway.

Pretty funny.

BTW - Buy an Bluetooth OBDII reader and use an Android phone/tablet with Torque.
It will read codes and reset them along with real time data. If you already have an Android device the reader and software can be had for what about a half tank of gas costs. Well that might be too expensive.....

Yeah. If its that big a deal to fill up with shell, just stop somewhere and add a bit of has. Then drive to a shell station

being so desperate for shell gas?? really?? to the point where you are willing to risk being stack on the shoulder and walking?? or damaging your car?? You must be getting really good deal with shell
but anyway, might be your fuel tank cap, might be the quality of the gas at that station, fuel pump will not die on you like that, they have some design proof for people that are so picky when it comes to gas and that will run dry. I think BMW should re-code the car and if after 30 km of light coming up and not filling up the engine should just shut down and walking icon should be displayed on the dash board and that should be coordinated with GPS to make sure the engine shuts down far away from any gas station ha ha ha
anyway, good luck man, hope it is nothing serious

I know we all swear by Shell but take a good look what the BMW owners manual actually recommends.

If you pay them enough, they'll recommend grape juice.

There could be 1000 reasons for why your check engine light is on.....best thing to do would be to take a little time and get the check engine codes read at a place that does it for free, and then post back with a little more information so we can help you.......

Many of us have tunes, where 93 octane is pretty much required.

Never understood BMW's fuel "recommendations."
