I would guess either curb rash, or the salt corroded the chrome lip off if he lives on/close to the beach.

My friend's chrom lip peeled off his Asanti's, as well as the chrome rivets started almost bubbling. He is getting them powedercoated blac (the chrome backs mentioned).

I assume same case scenario?

mothers powerball and their metal poilsh takes salt corrosion right off for me...
