Yeah I'm fine with that way things are, I was just curious. In retrospect, admittedly, it was a rather silly question

You know, I find it strange that BMW "doesn't have enough parts", if this is just bolts, then they should be cranking them out a lot faster than they would be consumed. This tells me there's more to this than just bolts. Like maybe they are replacing other components within the VANOS, like updated sprockets or chains maybe?

Got mine. Before my letter arrived, I was aware of the announcement that they planned to push the VANOS bolt recall. I had spoke with BMW NA and asked them about the out of pocket expenses if my bolts were to fail before the recall begins. She told me that repairs would be out of pocket if you are out of warranty however you could be reimbursed following the successful roll out of the recall if you paid out of pocket. I got no indication from her that they would try to fight the expense claims if you were unfortunate enough to have already paid for it's failure.

These are my thoughts as well- really doesn't make too much sense to me.

BMW does not make them. They have to place the order with the company that does. It is most likely one giant order that ships complete. Then they have to distribute it out to dealerships after knowing which cars are impacted and what their service dealership is.

People are way over thinking this entire thing.

I spoke with BMW NA on an unrelated issue and brought this up. They informed me that if we got the initial letter that we will be covered. The person I spoke with said they were not aware and could not find any information that the letters were sent to anyone by mistake.

He said wait for the second letter then contact a local dealership.

Yep. JIT inventorying and such means that the supplier fields the call from BMW "Hey, we need enough bolts to rebolt the VANOS unit on every n55 engine we sold for the past few years." by saying "Hey, yea sure no problem just one thing, what the fuck are you talking about? Where the fuck am I gonna come up with a million specialized bolts when you want a couple hundred a day?!?!?!"

2011 BMW 335i  [0.00]
I received my letter a couple weeks ago.

My VANOS bolts were replaced under warranty about 6 months ago (bolt broke and sent my car into “safe mode” etc.). I wonder if they replaced with the same parts BMW is ordering for this recall. If BMW is willing to replace again with something even more reliable, I won’t complain

Calm down boys and girls. Everything will be okay.

Q10. How will I be informed of the recall?
Owners and lessees of affected vehicles will receive a letter via First Class mail asking them to schedule an appointment with their authorized BMW center. 14V-176 Model Year 2010-2012 BMW 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, 5 Series Gran Turismo, 6 Series, Z4 BMW X3 SAV, X5 SAV, X6 SAV (Models with inline 6-cylinder engine) VANOS Recall
4

Q11. When will I receive my owner notification letter?
You will receive an initial letter in June advising you of this issue, and then an additional letter when parts become available, requesting that you bring your vehicle to your authorized BMW center for service and repair. No action is required on your part when you receive the initial letter.

You're simply receiving notifications of the impending recall..the campaign has NOT yet opened so keep your panties on and check your mail.

I believe they already changed the bolts to a different one. My guess is depending on what this happened to you, you already got the newer bolts. Would definitely call where the work was done and ask, though.

It would be just on the bolts associated to VANOS.... not a "full" extended warranty. Now if the bolts fail and cause issues those issues should be covered under the "extended warranty".

I recently bought this 335xi which is still under warranty, build date of Dec 2010. I assume I am part of the recall but have yet to get the letter. Is this something the service dept can confirm, or do I just sit tight and wait (and hope my engine doesn't blow up)?

If you are covered you will get a letter - you should have received the first one already but it may come soon.

As far as I know the dealership and BMW NA won't be able to verify if your car is eligible at this time. I think we all have to wait another month or so.
