Yes, you may be able to open the thermostat earlier but it will set codes. The ECU closely controls the coolant temp and doesn't like seeing unusually low temps. It can also slow the water pump until the engine is up to temp. It's a magnesium and aluminum block, who is to say that 97C is too hot? The engine definitely gets too hot under hard driving and track use, especially with 50-100 extra HP, but opening the thermostat earlier does absolutely no good for that.
