I think you have destroyed your own argument there......

Torque = in-gear acceleration = real world speed A:B.

Having said that, I would support your view that an in-line 6 is much nicer to listen to/rev....

Fortnately/unfortunately today's diesels are very different beasts to the old truck engines, and they perform very well indeed.
