Several years ago the Federal Govt mandated that gasoline powered cars use oil formulations with reduced anti wear additives. In a nutshell it has to do with the lifespan of catalytic converters (I just passed smog with flying colors at 200K). The diesel oils still have the higher levels of the quality anti wear additives than the newer gasoline oils use to have.
Modern gasoline oil formulations have gotten better to a certain degree but they've also gotten worse from another viewpoint and that is wear additives.
Not all diesel oils are the same and/or will work well with gasoline engines. Rotella T6 5W-40 is one of the better ones that work well in both gas and diesel engines.
