No clear coat applied, but I did apply a ceramic wax. I will re-apply every couple months. So far, no yellowing.

In theory, if the lenses are/were already yellow, the UV coating has burned off. I am not doing any further damage by sanding it down. However, like you said, you should re-apply some type of UV protection after cleaning the lenses. Either UV clear, ceramic coating, etc.
