I'd try the same thing with those bigger bits. Cut off the rough edges (don't peel it beccause they'll get worse), lightly sand and feather the edges, use a fine skim coat of spackle, and sand until smooth. I've done a disturbing amount of wall repair and I find the key is to use a nearly dry foam brush, and dab the area repeatedly until covered. Good luck.
